An England manager who has won things at world level, can change tactics mid game and drops or substitute his star players if they underperform? This sounds too good to be true.

A proven winner - sounds good enough to me.

My first choice would have been Hiddink but Big Phil was my second best so I'd be pretty happy.

I like the way that the guy has committed himself to learning English even before he was offered the job - that shows he's serious about wanting to do well.

Excellent choice. Its so funny listening to Radio 5/Talksport and them saying the public wanted an English manager.
Virtually everyone I know just wants the best man for the job and couldn't give a flying f*ck where they are from, if successful.

I think its a brave decision and I hope it works.

That's true: most people I know (including the ones on here) say "please don't let it be McClaren, Allardyce and Curbishley". I haven't seen much support for any of the English candidates.

He can't even speak English at the moment lol

Most qualified man for the job from a footie perspective though

In alot of ways this is the perfect appointment.

He is a winner at the highest level and the fact that he is Brazilian doesn't matter at this point in time.

I believe the FA seriously wanted to appoint an English manager but when comparing the current crop of possiblities they didn't match up to big Phil.

But what the FA must do is look to the future as well as the present, Scolari will probably get a four year contract and will probably leave straight after that, rather like he has done with Portugal and like most other foreign managers when managing another country.

What we must do is appoint a young english assistant, obviously Pearce springs to mind at present, and he must work with Scolari and be able to take over when the time is right

Got to be better than teh english candidates who've achieved exactly what?

A league cup win and mid table security in the premiership hardly world beaters.

Whats wrong with Martin Oneill ?

would be a comprimise as hes british and hes managed a top club in celtic but admitidly if scolari learns englesh well enogh hes the better man on paper, which is all we can judge it on. experience and passion, surely the 'he has to be english' camp will be satisfied

Great news

None of the other candidates have actually achieved anything. This guy has one the world (albeit with Brasil) the south american cup TWICE and taken Portugal to the final of the Euro cup.

What the hell has any of the English/Irish candidates ever achieved?

This thread is better than the other one, more specific. Well done Juicy.

I like Scolari, seems to have everything we need in an England manager. No doubt the press with destroy him though.

I personally DONT believe this story although looking at the other candidates on offer i wouldnt be dissapointed at all if he did get the nod.

I didnt think he spoke a word of english, hes had success at Brazil and Portugal yes, both Portuguese speaking nations....

Bring him on! Great Manager with a decent interntional track record. Did I say decent? World cup winner!!

A real indictment of the FA's failure to run English football in a way that will EVER deliver a world class coach.

And now Scolari is expected to weave his magic on a squad of players who themselves are the product of the FA's failure to run English football effectively.

I guess the fans will carry on dreaming of luck and glory. But anyone can see that there is something fundamentally useless at the heart of English football.

I don't know about that. They were in real danger of failing to qualify before Big Phil took over.

Has the credentials, but the language barrier is a BIG concern for me. Will he be able to get his ideas across to the players in an articulate manner ?
