'Irish prime minister (Taoiseach) Leo Varadkar has described Navalny’s death as a "further reminder that Russia is a deeply oppressive, deeply undemocratic country".
Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s PM programme, he said it served as a reminder to the West “not to take democracy, not to take human rights and our freedoms for granted".

"These are things that have to be defended. Freedom is never free.

That's worth repeating. 'These are things that have to be defended.'


Well Varadkar, why don't you follow your own advice and defend them then? You can apply to join Nato tomorrow.
(What he means of course, is that somebody else should defend them. Not Ireland).

And if any powers that be in the West are weakening in their resolve to help arm Ukraine‘s fight to retain it’s independence from Russia - surely the historical poisoning of one of Russia’s most influential opposition politicians and his subsequent death as a political prisoner, should give heads a wobble. As should the arrest of hundreds of human rights activists laying flowers in his memory.

I’m hoping that Putin’s henchmen if they were indeed responsible, have scored an own goal and instead of quelling opposition to Putin, Nevalny’s death might galvanise it. He might seen I think as a martyr to the cause. Unfortunately though, I can see another Tiananmen Square in the making if protests become too ’uncomfortable’ for Putin.

What an incredibly insecure leader is Putin. Unbelievable. The 'man' is a weed, very dangerous of course, but a weed.

I saw that, but from a different source. What was noticeable was the sheer volume of fake accounts with all kinds of various counter measures. All of them without any evidence of course.

Russia is upping the ante on the cyber warfare front.

The downing of another bomber is good news. Have heard that a US vote on the Ukraine funding is unlikely to happen for another 5 or 6 weeks - I don't know if the supply of much needed further weapons is dependent on that .

Only in the US could it take this long. I'm hopeful Germany will release the Taurus missiles beforehand, or at least alongside the next US release (if that time comes)!
Just praying Ukraine don't suffer too much while awaiting the right decisions to be made elsewhere.
Fingers crossed the F16s are mobilised by the summer. They will certainly impact russias ability to attack, given how easy it seems to be able to down the current fleet.
No ideas whether they will have the same issues with missile shortage for the f16s though.

The biggest issue seems to be actual ammunition right down to sidearm bullets. Logistics seem to be running fine, but they simply haven’t got the quantities needed of most types of ammo.

It's early days, but it looks like Navalny's wife, Yulia Navalnaya, is a strong woman, with the same steel about her as her husband.

But unlike her husband she has a grievance. A real, personal grievance, to bring to justice the people who killed her husband.

In the past, I've thought that Russia would benefit from a female leader. Someone to lead them out of the darkness.

One to keep an eye on.
