, I wasn't aware it started in 1971.Yes, there must be countless similar stories of loss. Poland has been a great friend to Ukraine since the invasion.I am so sorry to hear this and it's just another tragic story that you hear every day here in Warsaw, Poland from the Ukrainian community and it frustrates the living hell out of you that you cannot do anything to remove their pain.
My neighbour's parents and her bedridden grandmother have been living in a basement in Nikopol for 1.5 years now under constant bombardment trying to hold on to some semblance of normality. Like many Ukrainians here, most of the money that she earns here in Warsaw goes towards supporting them through the network of volunteers sending them things like generators, heaters, clothing etc...
The thing that frustrates me is that the West is becoming complacent in their attitudes towards the war in Ukraine, not fully understanding that they are falling into Putin's bigger plan.
I am not part of the tin hat brigade, but I am almost certain that the terrible actions of Hamas have been orchestrated by Putin to deflect the interest away from Ukraine, which will only end in a tragic mistake if the West falls for it, as he is already talking about controlling the Baltic sea along with bigger ambitions towards the former Eastern bloc countries.
Some background on myself, I am British and moved to Poland twenty-three years ago and have travelled extensively throughout Ukraine since 2002, along with many other former Eastern bloc countries.
Plus I have been supporting Brighton for 54 years and what a ride it has been.
It will be a big emotional (rather than large monetary) loss to my wife and her sister if they lose their right to their family home and adjoining land.
They worked that small holding as young girls helping their parents, and have great memories. They still hope to retain it's use for old friends in the village, but realise they may lose it.
Still, we are very lucky we haven't lost any family or friends to this war. Many have suffered terribly.
Yes, lets hope the West's words of support "for as long as it takes" stand true; but every change of government (anywhere) is a risk.
Like you I've supported the Albion for 54/55 years - originally from the East (?) terrace, with either sun or sleet in the eyes. A crazy journey indeed!

Ukrainen's children being taken to Russia and adopted, names changed and new birth certificates issued saying they were born in Russia. Completely changing their heritage and identity.
It was nauseating. Just makes you wanna see Moscow become the new Hiroshima.

After yesterday's accounts of unspeakable Russian war crimes, today brings some good news in that one element at least of Russian lawlessness is being faced down.

A kick up the backside to the US and EU from Landsbergis. I think some of statement is unfair (like the last sentence) BUT it's a clear warning from him.

And if they did, unless very deep, it should be pretty easy to take out I'd imagine (amateur military saboteur engineer speaking...)
I don't think the depth would come into it, it'd be easy enough to bomb the approaches and equally as vulnerable as the bridge to truck bombs etc.
But realistically there's no way they can build something of sufficient size within any reasonable timeline and no way they can build it while fully engaged in a war at the same time.

The reality is it would be outside of the timeline of resolution to the war anyway you'd guess? km's long tunnel will be years. And will be targetted

Yes, the persecution, execution and starvation of millions of Ukrainians by Russia (a policy, not an accident) is important to remember. It provides context for the current war: Russia feels it can treat Ukraine as a province, as it has always done, with complete disregard for human life.
