interesting twitter Thread by Gary Kasparov on closing airspace. Very well argued points

Even people you can't bring yourself to admit they've ever said or done something right, must, simply through random chance occasionally do or say something right.

Even you ..............................

a stalwart like you must know something positive that Her Majesty's British Government has done?

i assume you're retired so have plenty of time on your hands to dredge up something, anything?

There was always going to be somebody else still deeply upset about the collapse of the Soviet Union.

We know of two now that's all.

We move on.

It is interesting. I don't entirely agree with him.

He's underestimating the possibility that Putin, having subjugated Ukraine, will not have the money, the strength or the madness to attack a NATO country. I'm not claiming for a moment I know what Putin thinks. But it's at least possible, if not probable, that no attempted invasion of a NATO country will happen in the foreseeable future.

Of course, there is likely to be the odd border skirmish.

None of this is any consolation for Ukraine of course

Ukraine claim the Russian Major General Andrey Sukhovetsky has been killed by a Ukrainian sniper.

It amazes me that I have seen internet posts that it must have been western special forces who carried this out, as if Ukraine was incapable of doing it. Ukraine has an army larger than the UK, and has been fighting a low intensity war in Crimea since 2014. They are more than capable of carrying this out.

Seriously - and you got that from my condemnation of the actions of Russia

I am Irish by accident of birth - my grandmother was a Ramsey from Liverpool, my wife is half English and my father and mother were both born pre-Irish independence as British citizens. I am not and never have been a supporter of Irish nationalism or republicanism and I am not anti-British. I am a socialist, an internationalist and an anti-imperialist.

Now - back to the topic at hand - Russia's invasion of Ukraine is an imperialist power-grab by the regime of oligarchs led by Putin. They have adopted this approach for a variety of reasons, among which are the expansion by NATO into Eastern Europe, the attempts by the EU to bring Ukraine into therir sphere of influence and the efforts by the USA to establish military bases in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. The reality that a significant proportion of the population of the Ukraine (more than 8 million people) are ethnic Russians cannot be ignored, nor the efforts by sections of the far-right in Ukraine to drive ethnic Russians out of the country.

This conflict will not be resolved by sanctions (which are a form of warfare) or by NATO intervention - in fact both are likely to make the situation far worse. It requires a mass anti-war movement based on solidarity and unity of working class people, globally, but specifically in Russia. Such a mass movement is capable of developing into a mass organised opposition to Putin's regime. Unfortunately, imperialist wars and imperialist power-grabs are part and parcel of capitalism - it cannot be avoided in a system based on exploitation and oppression.
Your wife can’t be half anything that’s just crap.

One of her parents maybe English but she is from her place of birth with English descent. Her citizenship is determined by legal directive.

This is probably THE appeal everyone must try and give to: bullets rather than blankets will stop Putin, and it’s the Ukrainian military’s appeal.

Quite a few posts on Twitter (amongst the majority celebrating) saying this isn’t true and is a result of an account being hacked……..difficult to know what to believe at the moment.

Was just looking around for info on what China's current position is in all this and saw this recent video which summarises the situation; essentially on the fence, publicly erring away from Putin.

My wife did say that. I had "assumed" that big companies would be approached by someone more important than me. Maybe that will be next weeks plan.

Well I have had a colleague email today saying that nationally they (Tesco) are supporting the Red Cross, but that should not stop you trying. They may not give money but they may give you some goods - the shop I work in does that regularly to local charities and food banks etc. Worth a try, they can only say no.

Not impressed with the response from UK and USA on this.

At what point do we do anything?

It looks to me like we will do nothing (having said we would do nothing).

Putin has won, has he not?

We are doing the right thing. The minute there are boots on the ground, the minute the threat of nuclear becomes real.

If there is any doubt that nuclear weapons could be used, we cannot take that risk.

The massive sanctions and Putins lack of support for his army will fail him, ultimately.

I would love us to do more. But it's too risky.

dont engage mate, he's talking out of his arse, he has no idea of the reality in Ukraine, none. Its theoretical claptrap.

There are no far right nationalists trying to drive out Russian speakers, its bullshit. The nationalists group or the far right azoz battalion, are full of Russian speakers and ethnic Russian Ukrainians, only in his warped head is his fantasy a reality. The Russian speakers of which all my family are natives absolutely HATE Putin, they are ethnic russians, Donbas residents, currently being bombed to free them from a dictator they want dead. They love being Russian, they dont want to live in Russia or under Putin. They identify as Ukrainian.

And NATO didnt expand east for the 100th time. independent nations that were subjugated by Moscow into the warsaw pact against their will, moved westward and chose as sovereign nations to join NATO to protect against Russian imperialism and attempts to subjugate. They can leave NATO and chose Moscow if they wish to become puppet vassals again, they dont as they dont want too.

Is it?

I hope you're right.

The idea that we are too frightened of Putin launching the nukes to do anything is, in my opinion, not a good look.

If I were Putin I'd notice that, and crack on.
