Have a look at this.... Will need to hit translate at bottom. It's from Denis Danilov, a prominent Ukrainian political scientist, who is followed by many of the Ukrainian accounts we follow like Gerashenko etc.

He says a Finnish MEP has said, Trump has advised Europe they have 3 weeks to force Ukraines capitulation to Russia or else US is pulling out of Europe?

It sounds fantastical, or does it anymore?

Just did a search with ChatGPT and it came back with this:

Recent reports indicate that Finnish Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Mika Aaltola has claimed that U.S. President Donald Trump has given European nations a three-week ultimatum to agree on terms for Ukraine's surrender to Russia. Aaltola stated that if Europe fails to comply, the United States will withdraw its military presence from the continent. He further noted that President Trump is prioritizing Russia's security concerns in current and future policies.

This development has raised significant concerns among European leaders about the stability of the transatlantic alliance and the future of NATO's collective defense strategy. The potential U.S. military withdrawal from Europe could have profound implications for regional security and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

I think Zelensky just made a mistake to say he'd step down if Ukraine got NATO membership, even though I understand why he'd say that.

Putin and his puppets Trump and Musk are desperate to get rid of him. he's everything they're not, principled, putting nation before himself and a roadblock to their sick ambitions etc.

If Trump is serious about pulling plug on NATO anyway, he could railroad dissenters like Orban into approving Ukraine, most EU would probably support anyway, get them in, get Zelensky out, then pull plug on US involvement.

That would require that Trump knows what he's doing.

But even if that happened what would be the outcome? Trump and Putin declare war on Europe?

I think Europe (well, the EU) is big enough to cope.

But none of it will happen.

Well that's an easy one. Let them pull out.

Not sure that'll help the projection of US power.

I imagine it's a pathetic bluff, but even if it's not we have to say no.

I didn't read it that way.

I took that to mean that if the deal was 'Ukraine can join NATO but only if Zelensky steps down' - he'd happily do that. Putting country before himself.

I don't think he said 'If we join NATO, I will step down'.

There's no room or place for complacency.

We know that Russia is weak militarily and economically right now. So there is no need to worry. Russia is not about to run riot in Europe. For now.

But their belligerence remains as strong as ever.

The Royal United Services Institute said that as Russia suffers on the battlefield, we should expect an uptick on other fronts - cyber warfare, sabotage, disinformation, funding of far-right parties etc. They said that in the autumn of 2022. The passage of time has shown they were spot on.

There's a putchist purge going on right now, with yes men being installed underneath the ex fox news anchor yes man Hegseth.

It may not come to fruition, but I genuinely believe Trump is trying to take full control of all apparatus of state.

If he succeeds it could well happen.

I believe you, but at some point I hope America stands up and says no, we don't want to become like Russia.

I agree, I felt the same.
Still, he can backtrack, just say he was kidding... Trump changes his mind all the time.

Hopefully Ukraine would get into NATO, Zelenskyy would step down and new elections would be held. Zelenskyy would stand in those elections, and win.

I'm far from complacent.

We should be on a war footing now.

Perhaps we already are.

By war I mean . . . . well this bloke was clear minded.

We need to move to a war footing with immediate effect. Three years on this forum has taught me that Russia is deeply and profoundly malevolent.

Trump's stultifying incompetence has emboldened and strengthened a weakened Russia.

I was floored by a comment by an academic early in the war (whose name I can't recall), who said that Russia has been at war with us, since Putin rose to power in December 1999. It's just that we didn't notice.

A bitter and revanchist Russia will emerge from the peace process, whatever the outcome may be. A ceasefire will only provide a temporary respite for Russia to regroup and rearm. Peace will only create a vacancy for Russian imperialism to find another outlet, a softer target than Ukraine. That target will already have been selected.
