First Tunisia, now Egypt!

Do we think this will totally spire across the region. Good post earlier stating that of 23 countries in the Middle East only one is democraticly run.

If it does spire where next? and also what do you Israel is making of all this?

On a serious note,how would a change of government impact on the west ? Are these uprisings in the arab world about freedom or fundamentalism ?

It's probably just as important to worry about what the impact will be on neighbouring Sudan. And what the knock-on effect might be on the soon to be independent Southern Sudan.

Muslim Brotherhood is the main opposition in Egypt and their supporters range from moderate islamic democrats to Hamas/ Islamic Jihad supporting nutters. The scary thing is the membership has a huge proportion of graduates- these people have thought about what they want and they don't give a flying feck as to what Hague says. Israel will be worried tho- a change in leadership could see a ripping up of Anwar Sadat's peace treaty and then the region is screwed.

In Sudan - I really don't know.

It just seems to me that the current Sudanese government has been truly magnanimous in granting the population of the south a right to a referendum on independence, thereby opening the door to the undoing of one of the biggest absurdities left behind as a legacy of British colonial rule - almost as bad as the idea that Iraq was, in some way, a "nation".

A change in regime in Khartoum might change that.

From an Israeli stance they want nothing more than democratic & friendly neighbours. As I said earlier Israel is a little oasis in the Middle East. The world is becoming smaller & the Egyptian government can turn off the Internet but this cannot last for long & so long as most in the Islamic & Arab worlds are downtrodden by their own people & see what their European standard of living & life is like, it is only natural to have similar expectations.

As long as the power shifts to a secular democratic party it's a good thing.

If it allows more power to be placed into the hands of harder lined Islamic types then Egypt will go down the shiter.

Spent some time in Cairo a few years ago. Good people who even then wanted a change. Seems the Tunisia example has finally given them the balls to do it. Amazing scenes really. Poor people with nothing to lose.

AS Viney says I'm sure the palestinian people see Israel as more a cess pool than an oasis. And Israel has for years been stirring up tension amongst its neighbours with the objective of keeping them divided. Hardly the promoters of democracy you make them out to be.
