AS Viney says I'm sure the palestinian people see Israel as more a cess pool than an oasis. And Israel has for years been stirring up tension amongst its neighbours with the objective of keeping them divided. Hardly the promoters of democracy you make them out to be.

Since when has a state's foreign policy determined how internally democratic it is?

For example, America which is supposed to be the leader of democracy- look at their foreign policy record! Does that make the state less democratic?

I'm not sure it is right for Israel to be referred to as an 'oasis' as it gives an image of a place without any problems where everything is perfect. It is not. It has it's own problem e.g. with regard to discrimination amongst its Arab minority and the hijacking of the government by the religious right, but what democracy doesn't have minorities which face discrimination?

It may not be an Oasis but it is certainly the most democratic there is.

Heard a govt spokesman state yesterday when asked whether it was safe to visit or stay in Egypt `Apart from the main towns there should be no problems, also their website was being updated to assist visitors` He did not realise that the internet had been shut down.
Today holidaymakers in areas well away from the trouble spots stated they had been advised to stay in their hotels, which were having their groundfloor windows smashed.
I wonder what the next official announcement will say.

Hope this spreads across the Arab world. They could do with getting rid of the motley collection of despotic crooks that rule over them. The fact that the majority of the demonstrators appear clean shaven also seems promising to me.

It was the Oasis part i was reacting to.. The post i was answering wasn't really talking about the democratic process in Israel and nor was I! I was taking exception to a country which continually commits atrocities against a minority of people within its country, with the support of western nations and ignored by much of the western press, can be called and Oasis.

Democracy is a myth across the world, Hobson's choice!
