tricky,

Fair enough, I just think we come across as believing we have more influence
than we do.

On a serious note, how would a change of government impact on the west ? Are these uprisings in the arab world about freedom or fundamentalism ?

Anyone slightly worried where all these revolutions might be going? Whilst I am 100% behind democracy and an end to autocratic government, some of these leaders have effectively hidden the fact that their populations are incredibly pro-Islamist, what could an increasingly Islamist Arab world mean to us in the West?

i think its about change. 30 years is too long for any government. the risk is in the process of revolution you dont always end up with what you hoped for or expected. a call for freedom could easily end up with a fundementalist group seizing power. in the west we should hope that the military would, if faced with a choice, go for democracy over theocracy.

:lolol: They're probably fed up with stingy tourists not tipping them enough or buying souvenirs from their vendors, and I was the final straw.

The straw that broke the camel's back?

Egypt has been a key ally in the Middle East region for many years now, as a fairly moderate Islamic state. Those up top will be keen to make sure the fundamentalist tendency don't gain any kind of foothold as a result of the uprising.

There are 23 countries in the Middle East of which only one is a light to the world, that is completely democratic.

As for the rest - hopefully the Islamic & Arabic people will revolt & their rulers will be overun and democracy will ensue.

A dream? Maybe? But lets hope so & that there is no/little bloodshed.

On a lighter note, in Tunisia.

The wife of Tunisia's ousted president picked up some choice items before fleeing the country last week: 1.5 tons of gold bars worth $56 million.
Leila Trabelsi raided the country's gold reserves with the help of private militia and a phone call from her husband, diplomatic sources tell Le Monde (via Daily Mail). The chief of Tunisia's bank refused to hand over the money until former president Ben Ali intervened.
Trabelsi and her gold joined Ali in exile in Saudi Arabia.
Known as the Tunisian Marie Antoinette, Trabelsi lived an opulent and corrupt lifestyle (see: yachts and pet tigers) that helped spur popular outrage.

Did she ask for a bag, to carry it off in?

Is the opposition politician mohammed el baradei the same bloke who was in the UN nuclear inspection team in iraq ?
Yes, although with no 'politics' for 50 odd years, there's no 'party' to get behind him.

They aren't an oil-rich state no, their economy primarily relies on tourism. It's mutually beneficial that they don't fall out with the west though, they're an important bridge between us and the Islamic world.
