Anyhoo, back to the title of the thread

I like the thinking of Stuart Webber at Norwich. Essentially he is saying that he is not prepared to have Leeds and West Brom or anybody else coming up from the Championship to replace Norwich or anyone else unless the Championship plays to a conclusion as well as the Premier League. If Norwich play out the season and are relegated, he is not having the Championship simply nominate their choice of replacement from clubs who haven't played out the season ane earned it. It's a different approach, but I like it.

To be honest, why shouldn't the players have the final say. They are in fact the product we all go and watch. Other businesses will have other overheads, eg production costs and will also have to provide returns for shareholders. The money is there because the product is in demand and the broadcasters pay a hefty price for it. But they only pay that because their subscribers are willing to pay the broadcasters.

I don't entirely agree with this - I've seen the Albion in all 4 divisions and I'd still go again whichever division we're in. The Albion is part of my identity. The players come and go and to protect the club I'd be happy to release the majority of them, if it really came to it. English football should follow a more sustainable path, I don't care about "chasing the dream at all costs".

100% agree with him, why should a club lose it position in the league to a team that hasn't even completed their season.

Still think the Premier (and maybe other leagues too?) are thinking of the wrong target. This season isn't the problem - it's getting next season sorted so that it isn't a financial disaster that is the priority. This season should just be removed from the records and we have another go in 20/21.

The longer they obsess about this season, the less time they have to actually sort out what they will be doing in August. It's not so far now and it ought to be the main aim of the teams.

I also have seen them in all four divisions but the point I'm making is that provided a club is sustainable, then why shouldn't players get the largest proportion of income? The problem is with clubs that pay much more and are now exposed due to this pandemic. The further down the league then you have considerably less broadcast income so you cut your cloth accordingly. I do appreciate that, historically, cutting your cloth accordingly hasn't been at the forefront of most chairman's minds!

The money’s not necessarily there though. Brighton’s PL annual business model:

Income £143m
Costs £162m (including payroll £102m)
Loss £19m

It’s madness. The players are being paid £19m more than the club itself can afford.

Some major caveats to that in that their health minister has said that if one player or staff tests positive at any time their whole squad will have to quarantine for two weeks. Seems unlikely there wont be one or two cases across the league which would then bring it all to a halt. Obviously that ruling from the govt could change but in its current form it doesnt look great for them.

It's so flawed. Without the players onside though there is no project restart maybe if they manage to get it started at an as yet undefined date player power will mean teams putting out weakened squads of those brave enough to play but unwilling to put effort in as it's not the real game

Yep....until something dramatic happens that derails the whole thing again (I'm convinced it will, if the thing does get restarted at all) - hope it's not the death of a player/staffmember or person close.
