Walton is right according to the letter of the law. This states that VAR should be involved in penalty decision only if a clear and obvious error has been spotted. This year, with the pitch side review, VAR refs seem to be working around this rule by asking the referee to look again. This one went our way, but we had a penalty taken away against United when the error was not clear and obvious. It was also not clear and obvious whether Lallana and Kane's collision was inside the box (although to me it was clear and obvious that Kane committed the foul).

Surely if the ref gives a penalty and realises he shouldn't have, that's a clear and obvious error?

Giving a penalty when no foul has taken place, or even any contact made, is a very clear and a very obvious error to me.

If it wasn’t a clear and obvious error, Oliver wouldn’t have changed his decision. Therefore it was. Simple.

Primarily, Oliver didn’t spot Solly’s touch on the ball - that was obvious when he made the ‘ball’ signal with his hands after he changed the decision.

The clear and obvious error was that the ref didn’t see that March touched the ball.

He was probably told about it by VAR and then went to see the replay where he then corrected his error.

It's quite worrying how for the one time Brighton seem to have finally benefitted from some VAR this season a number of people are talking about the function of VAR and it's intervention for justice. Dean Smith also said something like, "it wasn't clear and obvious so why is it intervening?...and I would have been aggrieved if it was given against me.... I don't know what a foul is now". What's your point, you moron? It's not a penalty then is it? Sour grapes, yes, but incorrect decision...? No.

Walton jabbering on about the morality of VAR. STFU. Sounded like a villa fan. Pathetic. What comes across in both of those comments wasn't a thirst of the right decision but a desire for Villa to have just had the bloody penalty.

I heard this too. Let's consider that statement, from no other than a referee: " He -quite rightly - went down" Proof - if it were needed - that the game as we knew it has changed.
