Walton is right according to the letter of the law. This states that VAR should be involved in penalty decision only if a clear and obvious error has been spotted. This year, with the pitch side review, VAR refs seem to be working around this rule by asking the referee to look again. This one went our way, but we had a penalty taken away against United when the error was not clear and obvious. It was also not clear and obvious whether Lallana and Kane's collision was inside the box (although to me it was clear and obvious that Kane committed the foul).

Surely if the ref gives a penalty and realises he shouldn't have, that's a clear and obvious error?

Giving a penalty when no foul has taken place, or even any contact made, is a very clear and a very obvious error to me.

If it wasn’t a clear and obvious error, Oliver wouldn’t have changed his decision. Therefore it was. Simple.

Primarily, Oliver didn’t spot Solly’s touch on the ball - that was obvious when he made the ‘ball’ signal with his hands after he changed the decision.

March clearly touches the ball.

No penalty.

In cricket, for an LBW.... VAR does the inside edge, however slight it's NOT OUT.

Eat that Girlish.

He’s a Villa fan isn’t he? It’s also laughable that he’s the “expert” referee on BT. I remember him giving Southampton a penalty against us when the foul was about 5 yards outside the penalty area.

Oh God, Peter Walton, l've just realised who he is!

Yes l remember that incident too, it was one of the last games he reffed l think, what an idiot.

That was when Tano got sent off, looked at Lallana and patted his pocket [emoji23]

The clear and obvious error was that the ref didn’t see that March touched the ball.

He was probably told about it by VAR and then went to see the replay where he then corrected his error.

This.

I was staggered it was given in the first place.

The foul was in row Z of the stand, it was that far outside the area.

Solly got the ball and did not deliberately foul the Villain. The fact he goes down like he’s been shot when replays showed Solly’s touch was slight at best, said it all. Grealish did the same to get Tariq sent off! The rules are just encouraging more diving and theatrics!

Yes, I think I heard what he said...

"Var isn't there to make the right decision" I believe was one of his inane comments

It's quite worrying how for the one time Brighton seem to have finally benefitted from some VAR this season a number of people are talking about the function of VAR and it's intervention for justice. Dean Smith also said something like, "it wasn't clear and obvious so why is it intervening?...and I would have been aggrieved if it was given against me.... I don't know what a foul is now". What's your point, you moron? It's not a penalty then is it? Sour grapes, yes, but incorrect decision...? No.

Walton jabbering on about the morality of VAR. STFU. Sounded like a villa fan. Pathetic. What comes across in both of those comments wasn't a thirst of the right decision but a desire for Villa to have just had the bloody penalty.

Keown also was dumbfounded it was overturned, and this is coming from a former PL CB that played in the good old days. Shameful media coverage of it IMO.

#teamslikebrighton all over again. Enjoy it while it lasts. Next game we'll concede 3 pens and have a couple of goals overturned for Maups breath being offside.

Here he goes again. ‘He rightly went down’ talking about a Man Utd player who threw himself to the ground in the penalty area after feeling some contact to his shirt. The refs seem to be in on this nonsense.

I heard this too. Let's consider that statement, from no other than a referee: " He -quite rightly - went down" Proof - if it were needed - that the game as we knew it has changed.
