Truly awful challenge. I hope he is ok (in a few months)

Thats what VAR is there for but honestly what was Michael Oliver doing? I think he's a good ref but he's made some poor decisions this season.
I agree. That shouldn’t even have to gone to VAR. It’s a red card offence.

100%. Really poor from him, as obvious as it could be, doesn't need a replay to see that.

Unbelievable that the commentary team (is that Matt Upson?) was still talking about the keeper "getting a touch on the ball first", and describing it as a "genuine attempt to win the ball", as if there could be any defense for a head high flying kick.

About time keepers got treated like outfield players when they make ludicrous challenges like that. Why did it take so long to be a red card?

If VAR is there to correct ‘clear and obvious errors’ there is zero need for the onfield ref to go to the screen.

“Mike - you fvcked that up, it’s a clear red, change your decision“

Totally agree but under the current rules for subjective decisions such as handballs or fouls the ref has to be sent to the screen and shown the evidence themselves as the final decision always lays with the on field ref.

For factual errors, like ball out of play or offside VAR can make the decision themselves without the need for the ref to go to the screen.
