I would expect Barber to say 'we are obviously concerned for x who is conscious/unconscious but on his way to hospital. He has a visible injury and will be checked over. As you can understand it's too early to be more specific. We are also disappointed in the incident but will leave that to the football authorities to deal with. I don't want to say too much more at this stage as you can understand my concern'

I can’t get over what Oliver was doing with that Mateta ‘challenge’. Is there actually any point having a referee on the field at all if they can’t make the most of decisions themselves?
There’s a thought. No refereeing officials in the ground at all. All done remotely and announced over the tannoy system. It would cut down on dissent!

But it WAS a genuine attempt to win the ball. I didn’t feel they were suggesting that prevents it from also being a red card. It’s a valid enough observation as it would be a different motivation entirely if the keeper challenged like that and was nowhere near the ball. It draws a distinction between a terrible tackle like that and Schumacher’s outright assault on Battiston in 1982 where there was no attempt to win the ball at all.

Biggest surprise to me - given the potential severity of the injury and the situation still evolving - is that the BBC chose to show several gruesome replays again at halftime.
Yeah, when it was compared to 1982 it's not even in the same league. Schumacher should have been sent to prison for that.

I've just seen it first time. It is the worst challenge of it's kind I can remember for some time. No intent, but utterly reckless.

The keeper is either an evil thug or so incompetent at his job of being a footballer that he's a literal danger to the people around him. I'm leaning towards the latter, but if he's this bad at football he shouldn't be playing the game professionally (arguably at all, I mean that wouldn't be acceptable in Sunday League would it?)

He got the ball first so I’d argue he’s not incompetent.

Keepers are trained to commit fully to those sort of situations.
He's done exactly that.

It is mistimed (but not horrendously so, he did get the ball after all).
There really is a massive over-reaction to it.

The challenge on Mitoma last season, was every bit as bad, and still wasn't picked up by the ref.

Agree, eyes were on the ball and that was his sole focus (excuse the pun)
No malice in it at all.

Unfortunate injury, it’s a contact sport and things happen in a split second but he had every right to go for the ball which he won.

Had he seen Mateta I wonder if he’d have gone with his foot.

The outcome deserved a red but it should just be that, a standard red card and no additional sanctions

It's a keeper running out of his area to hack the ball clear.
Maybe, but you are not allowed to to go in for a 50/50 ball at head height with your studs up like Bruce Lee.

And how Michael Oliver has not deemed this to be an automatic red is beyond me. He is fast becoming one of our inconsistent referees, going from good to bad.

No denying it's a red.
But some of the claims about it being the worst challenge ever are well over the top.

It's a pretty sensational outcome, granted, but keepers hacking a bouncing ball clear is a fairly common occurence.

I don’t disagree that keepers hack clear. I just think this was incompetence of the highest degree. His judgment is beyond poor and if I were his manager I’d be taking him to one side for a serious conversation. He could blind a player doing that. I wouldn’t want to be on a pitch with him.

He misjudged the ball from Hughes.
Shouldn't have come for the ball, as he was second favourite, but once he had, he made sure he cleared it.

I really don't think it's as bad a mistake as it's being painted.
The tackle on Mitoma, last season, was far more pre-meditated
