He misjudged the ball from Hughes.
Shouldn't have come for the ball, as he was second favourite, but once he had, he made sure he cleared it.

I really don't think it's as bad a mistake as it's being painted.
The tackle on Mitoma, last season, was far more pre-meditated
Remind me never to play football with you 😂

You’re not a keeper are you?

I like Mateta - a big burly 9 who has a good work ethic. Sounds like he'll be fine and that is the main thing.

The 'keeper will learn from it but may find his career path is downward.

What is it about that stadium and high kicks?

he’d probably have got his own player if Mateta hadn’t fouled / pushed the defender

Oh, and Beaky. I'm not bothered what he said but you know that when BBC emailed the main men at Palace asking who might available for a HT interview, he replied 'ME' before they got any out of offices.

Usual hyperbole and exaggeration from many quarters I guess.....it was a stonewall red and Oliver should have realised immediately but worst ever ??? It would at least need to be 100% premeditated for that (Keane on Haaland for example) and I don't think he was intending to injure Mateta. Ill-judged and executed, and dangerous for sure but not the worst ever. Beaky was caught in the raw emotion of the immediate aftermath.

People have shown the still picture of the challenge and, looking at that, it's incontestably a straight red, and how the ref didn't give it immediately is hard to say.

BUT look at the live footage and see where the shadow of the stand is.

On a very sunny day, the keeper (wearing dark it) is running from the shade into bright sunlight, and the sun is in the ref's eyes. Perhaps not quite so straightforward a decision then, possibly?

Agree, eyes were on the ball and that was his sole focus (excuse the pun)
No malice in it at all.

Unfortunate injury, it’s a contact sport and things happen in a split second but he had every right to go for the ball which he won.

Had he seen Mateta I wonder if he’d have gone with his foot.

The outcome deserved a red but it should just be that, a standard red card and no additional sanctions
My split-second thought about the keeper as the ball dropped over the top was 'what's he doing out there?'. Once he was committed outside the box, he had little choice but to go for it and didn't fancy sticking his head in. So he went with a very high foot, which was a bad decision - but one taken in a fraction of a second, pumped up by the atmosphere very early in a game that was always going to be feisty.

No malice but fully justified red card, obviously.

There were plenty of audible chants from the Holmesdale end of "where's your goalie gone?" to the Millwall fans yesterday. Whether this was a direct aim at the tragedy of Matija Sarkic in the summer or the nutcase sending off is still unclear. But hey, let's give the Premier League club the benefit of the doubt and accuse Millwall fans of being scum for singing one of the oldest chants in the game when they didn't know the seriousness of the situation.

All the reporters can f**k right off with dragging Millwall's name through the mud again.

Update from a Palace friend, Mateta’s ear was nearly sliced in half. He received 28 stitches. When he left Selhurst Park he was covered in blood, and in a neck brace.
