Oops!! Not that I'm a runner, but how gutted would you be.
Looks like some took it well; others were furious. If it was a PB then I think I'd be in the latter camp.
I once did a 10K organised (or at least based at) Lancing lah di dah College. After running for about 40 minutes and being not very near the finish a number of runners began to wonder if there was something wrong. This was confirmed as we approached the finish - not only were we minutes slower than anticipated and obviously running 10k+ (this was before the Garmin!) but we were also passing (I'll put this diplomatically) older, larger and slower runners who somehow had 'overtaken' us. The really funny thing (it wasn't so funny at the time) was that there were gold medals for the first 50, silver for the next tranche and then bronze for everyone else. So as we crossed the line it was by then obvious that the early leaders of the field had been wrongly marshalled and run about 13k, so the guys handing out the medals had to make a judgment call (presumably on body shape!) on who got handed which medals. This created even more confusion and there were some livid runners at the finish hunting for their sense of humour and gold medals.
The event was never run again.
