Has anyone on here suffered from lower back pain? Typically my lower back feels stiff and painful when I wake up. This subsides and disappears after about 10-15 minutes of moving around. It is more a bone pain as opposed to muscular.

I'm having weekly physio and have some exercises that I do regularly. I am confident these will work as my physio has vastly improved my knee/hamstring and an unrelated shoulder issue. But the back is very slow progress. Anyone had, or have, such a problem? How did you resolve it?

Anyone had a bad back willing to share their experience?

Bow down to these kind of times, note further down Herr T has got two of these.

I can do a 41 min 10K, a 1hr 40 1/2 marathon but can do below 4hrs for marathon, any advice for how I can take my times and train better for the marathon, gratefully received.

I really rate the Runners World marathon training plans. I have used these for all 3 of my 26 milers and they have worked out perfect each time. My suggestion to improve your marathon time to a) choose one of these from their website b) give yourself plenty of time to get up to the base level starting fitness for the 4 month plan c) stick to it. On this note I sometimes did two days of running in a single day so I didn't miss out. I even ran around Courchevel whilst on a snowboarding trip so I didn't miss out d) the aim is to keep an even pace throughout the race so work on this. I struggle at starts, taking 5-6 miles before I get into my stride so I work on this in training.

Also, print off a race-pace wrist band so you can check your time at each mile marker.

When I went for a good-for-age time I had a heap of other tips in my locker as well. I stretched out when running down hills to take advantage of the slope, I tucked in behind runners when heading into wind. 2-3 seconds saved per mile adds up when your working with small time margins.

Add a bit of luck and you'll get your time.

Did a cheeky 7 miles this evening. Finished with frazzles. Are these better/worse than Bobby's Bacon Streaks?

A worthy substitute but, for me, not the real deal  I tend to go beef Monster Munch if there's a Streaks shortage.

Hi Guys, well having had my own little thread seeking help and support in starting on a programme to get me running, i have now joined the big boys! Have had great encouragement from everyone, so please bear with my humble efforts. Am undertaking a beginners prog of a mins jog and 3 mins walking, and am on week two now. Have set a target for March 25th of doing Sports relief 3 mile run. As my furthest thus far is a mile, stopping a fair few times, it seems a long way off, but gotta start somewhere. Anyway, pleased to join you all. Highway

Good upgrade Highway, welcome. As you can see the main discussion here is Bobby's bacon streaks & Roast Beef Monster munch. That's running for you.

Welcome. And good luck with your three miler. I'm sure you'll get plenty of support and tips on here as you did on your thread.

Well done H61, your own thread is great, keep it going by all means.

My question to all the running gurus on here is:

My girlfriend has just started running, done six 2.87mile runs now and her time has gone from 37 mins to start with to plateau at 34-35mins. I appreciate its not all about time but I think the thing she enjoys most about it is seeing the time improvements.

Whats the best advice re improving her minute mile pace? Ideally she wants to get down to 10min/mile

Cheers

Did anyone do the 10K today?
How did Frau T do?
a 14 miler for me, building that winter base training before embarking on my quest for a sub 4 hr marathon next year.

Did the Brighton 10k today & really enjoyed it. Only started running again two months ago, so quite pleased with 51mins. Lovely weather & a good turn out of 2,700 runners with many family & friends along the way.

Frau Tubthumper clocked 01:01:51. I'm pleased for her as she only recently took up running.

If you want to get faster, first thing is to run more! You become fitter and more efficient which means you can run faster with less effort, so increase the miles, most people do shorter runs in the week and a 'long run' at the weekend, now for the 'long run' this is all relative so she should start with a 4 miler if she is doing regular 3 milers in the week and build up. Next she needs to do one of her runs in the week at a faster pace than normal, this will get her out of her comfort zone and make the other runs easier at a faster pace, if you just do steady runs you never really get quicker. This can be unstructured ie pick a target a run faster toward it then jog & repeat or 1 min fast 1 min slow etc.
