Well until recently I spent most of the time working in London, and I got the impression that nobody cared about anyone other than themselves. One of my friends from London came down to Brighton for the first time, and couldn't understand why I was having a conversation with the barman, despite the fact I'd never met him before...

See thats weird - I lived in NW8 for 4 years and from the first day I was there (having come straight from New York) I was blow away by the fact that people said hello to complete strangers on the street each morning, or at least a smile and a nod...

OK - so the commuter peeps were different but I didn't hesitate to chat to any barman or waiter/waitress...odd!!

Abort, retry, fail
c) Looks like a typical provincial town after closing time.

What, cos the streets are so dead at night? No bars or clubs?
d) Over-priced property.
Well yeah! Isnt it everywhere

e) No decent gig venues.
The Brighton Academy is to open next year, followed by Falmer, followed by the new Brighton Centre.

f) No football stadium.
Not long now!

g) Huge litter problem
God, I thought it was just decrepit elderley ladies bothered by this.
 Not at all. It is all about quality of life.

h) Limited high quality open space
Er, hello? South Downs, plus a number of beautiful parks, plus the sea!
Within the city. I was really mainly talking about The Old Steine which is certainly not maximised to its full potential

i) Original buildings allowed to decay/replaced with poor substitutes
This is starting to be fixed.
I truly hope so, but there has been too much damage in most cases - There is a very good book floating about and which buildings were lost to the City (can't remember the name

j) Severely lacking in decent sports facilities
Have to agree with you on this one, come on King Alfred & Falmer.
It is slowly getting there. Black Rock is in the offing, Yellow Wave is fantastic. This Falmer thing you talk of sounds good.

k) Minimal pedestrianised areas
Again, surely more than a lot of other cities - the Lanes, and soon most of North Laine.
True, but there is a great potential for more.

I do love Brighton, but it is yet to fulfill it's potential.

A thread to show that I have travelled much more than you have.
Na na na na na.

Seeing as I started the thread and nominated Paris, hardly :bigwave: although some people seem to have trouble narrowing it down to one place and cover quite a bit of the globe doing so I must admit !

eh ? ..... prince albert, the hope, audio, ocean rooms, pav theatre, dome.... just for starters these are easily decent venues.........plus the bingo hall on middle street is set to become a carling academy, gloucester is now barfly (soon to be renovated) and the freebutt may or not reopen.

can't understand people bigging up Auckland - imo the worst place in NZ, Wellington is a much more buzzing city.

as for other greats, i'd go for Varanasi, Barcelona and Melbourne.

The free state of Kemp Town
Havana is a fantastic city - quite possibly my favourite in the whole world.

WERD

Entirely unmissable

And if the septics ever get their filthy hands on that country mark my words there'll be a bloody revolution

But London is full of rude w*nkers? You have to admit.-
I don't agree. You get a lot of pushing on the public transport but that is the same in every big city.

And the other thing is that tourists tend not to get treated like shit in London. Unlike the most overrated city in the world, Paris.

Only west street! and probably less than other cities, though this may be due to the prevailing ecstasy culture.

You don't see it in London - or major cities around the world.

Like I said, it's a provincial town thing.

(And nothing to do with ecstasy)

It's full of pissed-up/under-age 'lads' and pissed-up/under-age/under-dressed girls. And police.

not really

the beauty of brighton is that all the twats are confined to one road......step outside of there then its grand

oh, and the police presense is much less than other cities

What I meant was, outside of west street, i.e. on the seafront, it may well be... You certainly dont get so much trouble down there on a Saturday night.

A choice between London, Cape Town, Hong Kong, Miami, Varanasi and my all time favourite Venice.

Yep I'll go with Venice

You're right, but so in Turienzo's Lovechild. You don't see tons of police in London at 11pm because it simply doesn't shut down at 11pm. Equally, the presence of police in Brighton is definietely far more low-key than many other provincial towns and cities.

yep, it may just be me but i have seen no more than.........5? fights in brighton clubs/bars etc.

maybe i'm going to the "wrong" places, but brighton has a very different vibe to most "provincial" towns and cities..........especially in the summer
