er, Brighton and Hove... surely there's no competition?

I actually mean this by the way. There can surely be nowhere else in the world where everyone, who ever they may be, is so accepted. Isn't that what cities are about, getting along?

Admitedly I'm going to New York next weekend, but I'd choose Brighton any day, the coolest city in the world.

I love B&H, but it is let down by two major problems:

a) Horrendous traffic
b) In order to be able to live somewhere decent, you have to endure the tedious commute north. No thanks.

I don't know about horrendous traffic... I always find it better than any other city in the country in that respect, provided you know how to avoid New England Road, York Place, etc. I'm always surprised how well it flows considering how many commuters live there. Know what you mean about commuting though, even though I only work in Worthing,

At the end of this, I think we should have a poll to find which was the most pretentious answer.

This is getting unwieldy for a poll, is it fair to say that somewhere needs at least two nominations to make the poll, as hopefully there will be many more responses by tomorrow?

I like Paris but Metz is a better city in France imo
I love Athens. Their underground stations are beautiful, full of artwork and marble. The Greeks are really friendly and helpful.

Metz is a shithole compared to Paris...IMO

Rome would be mine, followed by Johannesburg and before they ruined it, Salisbury ( Harare) was a beautiful City.

Well, depends on definition of a city I suppose. Some countries seem to give city status to three tin shanties and its own rubbish tip (Croydon ),where others retain the cathedral/university/nail parlour preference.

I'd go with Sydney,Buenos Aires,Paris,Perth (WA),Edinburgh,Cuzco,Montreal or Croydon.

What, cos the streets are so dead at night? No bars or clubs?
d) Over-priced property.
Well yeah! Isnt it everywhere

e) No decent gig venues.
The Brighton Academy is to open next year, followed by Falmer, followed by the new Brighton Centre.

f) No football stadium.
Not long now!

g) Huge litter problem
God, I thought it was just decrepit elderley ladies bothered by this.

h) Limited high quality open space
Er, hello? South Downs, plus a number of beautiful parks, plus the sea!

i) Original buildings allowed to decay/replaced with poor substitutes
This is starting to be fixed.

j) Severely lacking in decent sports facilities
Have to agree with you on this one, come on King Alfred & Falmer.

k) Minimal pedestrianised areas
Again, surely more than a lot of other cities - the Lanes, and soon most of North Laine.

Londons is brilliant, as is Sydney (of course I'm biased) but for "living in" the best city for me is New York.

Washington DC is the worst!!

But London is full of rude w*nkers? You have to admit.-

I'm not sure about that - to be honest it was never something I really noticed.....although I had been living in New York for many years prior so maybe my radar to all things rude/odd/weird/selfish had been de-tuned?
