You can see most of it nowadays by watching tv shows like Spartacus or Westworld.

When I think back to my youth sitting and watching some film at 1am on my small tv in my bedroom with the promise of a brief flash of Jenny Agutter's left breast was the best it got

Restricting my personal freedoms is my business.

I regard you as a selfish fu*kwit then

Your personal freedoms outrank all the harm that is being done to children do they? Sad.
(before you argue it does no harm to children please at least do a bit of googling as the evidence out there is pretty damning)

Luckily your views do not represent the majority of sane humans

And to be clear. I have absolutely nothing against (consensual) making or viewing of pornography by adults. I am strongly libertarian with regard to behavior of grown ups - it would be hypocritical of me to take any other position.
I just think it is far to easily accessible to children and that is a problem that needs to be addressed

Should also say i have nothing against nudity on telly (or anywhere really) indeed am strongly in favour as I am also in favour of sex education at a young age

What we are talking about is children seeing unrealistic, often violent and misogynistic depictions of sex at very young ages.

For those of us of a certain age, Parade, and Health & Efficiency seem a long, long time ago.

I work with some people who organise a weekly Auction, specialising in house clearance stuff.

Every week there is at least one lot of absolute VINTAGE Grumble magazines. The kids of today just don't realise the GRIEF we had to go through back then, in order to PROCURE such material. From finding a friendly Newsagent, to befriending the one guy in the year who had a beard and could pass as 18, to the many hiding places in local parks we used to use.

The Holy Grail was staying at a friend's house and discovering his Dad's stash.

Happy. Days.

No you're not.

A Libertarian would argue against all Government interference when it came to banning or restricting something on the basis this is not the role of a Government.

You'd argue that its the parents role to ensure their children are exposed or not exposed to such materials based on what they deem acceptable. You're essentially arguing for a nanny state intervention here. The irony is your claiming to be a Libertarian yet you're willing to hand power to an institution up to its eyeballs in child abuse rumours, cover ups and scandals.

Based on whose opinion if I may ask?

Agree with you on that front. Parents have a huge role to play, of course, awkward though that may be at times, and our education policies clearly aren't as enlightened as they are in certain other countries. But the pressure being put on- mostly- girls as a result of the widespread availability of porn to kids is huge.

How pathetic must we be as adults if we think that our desire to have easy access to such material is more important than the well being of our chiilfdren?

so what else would you like censored to protect the under 18's? all depictions of sex? how about violence, domestic abuse, war, disease, depression, injury, all potentially impacting well being? the news and evening TV is going to be a lot blander.

let be sensible about this subject, banning some types of porn doesn't reduce children's exposure to porn, it limits it to a government determined subset. and they'll get round it, through their mates, encrypted channels, their parents logged in account.

You could always find a stash in quite obscure places, looking back I am guessing some saddo was having one in the bushes, but Knave, Readers Wives and Forum could always be found in the bushes in my local park or randomly in the middle of some road, smuggling them home was the tough bit ...

Got to agree.with you there, I think it's terrible some of the stuff they've undoubtedly viewed , mine swear they haven't, but I don't really believe them.

I only ever had a PC in our front room and not in my childrens bedrooms and for those parents that think 'not my kids' I think its worth translating this into pre internet times.

For me its growing up in the 70's, you have to start thinking what would have happened if we went to our bedroom each night and it was awash with different magazines, of course many good ones, National Geographic other educational ones, puzzle books, Shoot, Beano etc but also in the corner was a couple of nuddy magazines.

How long would it take before we took a peek at the dirty stash and at what age might this become the most popular magazine to look at ??

Accessing the internet lets modern children access the most inappropriate material parents need to be aware of it, brings me on to a mate who looked at his search history after his 8 year son had used his PC to find 'good looking fanny's', he'll learn .......

Blimey, you and me agreeing Alf. I think all parents can do is assume their kids have seen this stuff, but make it clear that it isn't normal sex, and should never be practiced unless all parties are consenting adults. To ban it from the net is nie on impossible, i would have thought, so educating children that it is not really a part of a loving relationship s the way forward

The key, as others have said, is education. As awkward as it may be for some parents, it's your responsibility to talk to your kids about sex (and these days porn in particular) from a pretty young age.

The fact is that they WILL see this stuff whether or not you try using "parental controls" or whatever the government attempts to ban.

So what you need to do is make it very clear to them that sex and porn are two different things and the stuff that they may see is not representative of most real life experiences.

It's not actually that difficult but it is the parent's responsibility, seeing as sex education in schools is useless and done too late.

All this argument about whether or not the government should be trying to censor the internet or not (they shouldn't obviously as it sets a very dangerous precedent) is actually irrelevant as it doesn't work.

It genuinely worries me mate , I have told them hat it's not the stuff they should be looking at , I think after reading your post I might try explaining why in more detail , but we both know what 13 and 15 year old boys are like , I knew far better than my stupid parents at that age !
