those fighting for their lives in ambulances and buses weren’t affected by the imposition of bus lanes.

I've never been fighting for my life on a bus, but thanks. You've put me right off using one of those as well now.

You've clearly not used the 1 route on a Saturday night. Keep it that way

I have stopped shopping in Brighton because of the parking charge hikes and the obsession with stopping traffic in the city centre. I go to Crawley now. It's a shame, because i love Brighton.

Me too. I only venture into Worthing from Shoreham now to top up my vinyl collection. Obviously not as a nice ambience but parking is so much cheaper and no jams atm.

I find the 700 is very do-able. Pretty quick, plus it turns up at Grand Avenue, thus completely avoiding the utter mayhem that has been unleashed on the seafront now.

TBH I've avoided driving through Brighton as much as poss over the years, but now they've totally snarled it up its even more essential to swerve. Used to enjoy a spin out to the Marina, but I guess thats off the agenda now.

And to be honest, whichever other city they plan to drive in or through anywhere in the country they are going to find similar problems. Because councils up and down the country are taking advantage of the Emergency Active Travel Fund. And guess what. None of them are able to magic up land for sustainable transport in their city centres, it has to come from somewhere and that will be roads.

And not just in the UK. Cities all over the world are grappling with the same problem of how do you keep cars out of your city whilst the COVID crisis has reduced public transport capacity. It's a cultural shift which will take time for people to adjust the way they travel. A few initial traffic jams aren't going to change the councils plans.

A27 to Falmer then down through Woodingdean to the Marina, reverse on the way back?

I can only assume the cycle lanes are jammed with a new cyclist this morning, loving their new-found enthusiasm for two wheels.
Puppies and cycles will be abandoned in record numbers given a few months, by those liberal lefties like Schofield, and he will pop up in an ad, selling, we buy any bike.com, and we buy any puppy.com

OK, I've been on this since day -1 when we first heard rumours about it happening. I work on Kings Road just 150 metres from the West St junction and see first hand the chaos. In the last few days I've witnessed-
Police woman on cycle stayed on A259 when she should have veered off to the pavement. She merged with the cars and was almost knocked off.
Ambulance, fed up with waiting, drove fast on the wrong side of the road. Could so easily hit a pedestrian or child .
Fire engine stuck in traffic (they don't fit into the cycle lane). Cars couldn't get out of the way.
Fire engine again stuck. Cars tried to get out of the way ran over the bollards and had to get out to remove them.
As for the traffic. Delivery drivers have all said they are considering refusing to deliver to the area. My staff, who all use the bus, have to add 30 minutes to their journey as the buses are all delayed.
If you have a few hours to spare come down to the seafront and sit opposite Middle Street and just watch, you just wont believe what you see.
DID YOU KNOW
Now here is an interesting fact. ALL pedestrian lights have been reprogrammed to stop cars more often FACT.

Train to Brighton, jump on the 7. 46 minutes and no additional pollution!

I think what these cycle lane changes will male public transport the first thought someone will have when planning a journey

If I was planning a trip to say, the Natural History Museum, my first thought, wouldn’t be to plan a route to drive to Kensington. My first thought would be “right, how much would a train and a tube (or bus) be?”

Brighton and most of the other cities up and down the UK are 20 years behind London, but that thinking will change quickly. When congestion charging and mass cycle lanes were introduced, the driving lobby predicted the death knell for London city attractions. It hasn’t happened there and it won’t happen here.

And yes London has a tube system and Brighton doesn’t, but the buses are regular and reliable. We also have an excellent bike hire scheme. In fact last time I went to the Marina, I went to Brighton by train, hired a bike from the front of the station, down Queens Road, West St and along the seafront. Got a 7 back.

I’m sure the majority of drivers upset by these changes haven’t considered these other options. The shift will be initially painful as people spend a lot of time in traffic jams, but in Brighton as with most of Britain’s cities, in a few year’s time, people will find it odd that it was considered normal that you could drive into or through them.

Glorious Shoreham by Sea
This and the stupid one on old Shoreham Road need to be scrapped, immediately!
. Whoever signed this off has to walk or be sacked, name and shame them! Disgraceful what has happened to this city. Get them out

Is the bike lane even open yet? It's so hard to tell. There are long sections of it that look ready to go, but then there are sections where they're still working. I used it for the first time yeaterday (though not sure if I should have, I did see another cyclist using it) I joined it at the roundabout and stayed on it to the bottom of west street where it joins the pavement. There are lowered kerbs to get back onto the street, but there were also maintenance trucks parked in the road lane, and they still haven't removed all the westbound symbols on the pavement lane.

Might explain why it's not that busy at the moment.
