There's a 1001 studies concerning city wide transportation, they all reach the same conclusion.
It boils down to:-

Less cars = Better economy.



There's genuinely isn't a single study that states cities businesses, tourism, economy and all financial knock on effects, house prices etc, are harmed by a reduction in cars.

Now there's a 1001 pieces of anecdotal evidence from transportation luminaries like Felicity Kendall that will tell you otherwise, but I'm going to suggest she may not be well versed on all aspects of the science behind transportation.

This 50 in cars, 500 in front of pier I don’t buy, I drive past the pier 20 times a day and at least 50 percent have two people in them !

One of the biggest issues in the city are taxis!

Brighton Hackney Carriages have issued plate numbers upto 999

Brighton PH plates also upto 999

Lewes DC (majority Uber) highest plate number I’ve seen 528

Others? Say 100

Total 2,626

Let’s say a quarter of this total hasn’t been allocated 1,969

Let’s assume 50 percent aren’t working

That then leaves 984 taxis possibly running round Brighton daily !!!!!!!!!!

I genuinely hoped, but never actually believed, the last few months would have people resetting their habits.
It's such a shame we've instantly reverted back to the dark days.

Chances are it'll now only get worse with the implementation of projects like this that seem doomed to fail.

I predict what will happen is:-

We'll have a month of bitching.
A 'temporary' period of time where car drives feel less violated by the lane.
At which point it'll be removed.
Car drivers will then have a month of saying 'this is brilliant'.
Then they'll be moaning about being stuck in traffic again.

If all the lazy gammons stopped using taxis and buses and cycled instead we could get rid of both of those transport mediums, there would be far less road blockage and more room for private cars, work vans and bicycles to co-exist.
Everyone is happy.........not the gammons obviously, unless the health benefits of cycling as opposed to bus riding are educated into them.

What is this fascination with the constant use of "gammons" has you mate in the playground taught you a new word?

It's already the case that cars have to give way to pedestrians when turning left (Rule 170)

Didn't know this, always believed road users had right of way on the road except at traffic lights and designated crossings.
Surely is must be the same when turning right? if not why is a left turn more significant?

It isnt that a left turn is more significant. If cars had to give way to pedestrians when turning right you would end up blocking the opposite lane and potentially causing accidents. Left turns dont have that problem.

It IS the same when turning right. The highway code makes no mention of whether you are turning left or right:

watch out for cyclists, motorcyclists, powered wheelchairs/mobility scooters and pedestrians as they are not always easy to see. Be aware that they may not have seen or heard you if you are approaching from behind
watch out for pedestrians crossing a road into which you are turning. If they have started to cross they have priority, so give way

Proposed new text is:

Good to see you embracing the current in thing of not looking at the detail and ignoring experts.

Despite the Council's keen take on temporary cycle lanes after Johnson said ride ride ride (or some other slogan) surely there must have been an impact assessment, a financial benefit assessment all within an overall medium/long term City transport plan.

It would be interesting to see what the experts said in the planning phase, or was it just a political decision with no concern on the impact of the changes.

Judging by the obvious effect it was always going to have on traffic on what will always be a busy road for lack of other routes, I'm going with the latter

So the differences are you'd have to stop for pedestrians when exiting a junction too, and also give way to any pedestrians waiting to cross, not just those who were already crossing. Disappointing use of "should" rather than "must" IMO.

If they are going to use "should" rather than "must" then its a pointless exercise as it can't be enforced. it just a recommendation rather than an instruction.

The buses are good for radial routes running to/from the centre.

But not for anything else eg schools or work in one suburb, home in another. Plus to mention out of centre shopping, miles away from homes.

Regarding through traffic, do people who live in Shoreham, Lancing or Worthing, who need fo get to Newhaven, Seaford or Eastbourne really travel in countless miles of slow A259 traffic through the conurbation? Those drivers naturally use the A27.

The text in the highway code can be used as evidence in cases. The code itself has always been advisory.

My understanding is the use of should/must has significance. If you transgress any part of the highway code where "must" or "must not" is used then you are guilty of an offence. If you transgress any part where should/should not is used then this could be used to establish liability, so you may be guilty of an offence.
