[Brighton] New cycle lane a259 Brighton

⚠️ Due to the new cycle lane on the coast road, there's very heavy traffic in central Brighton causing delays to westbound services (along the seafront) and southbound services (from St Peter's Church). ⚠️

Brighton & Hove Bus Co

But our public transport is fantastic, so it's a brilliant idea to take out main road lanes and replace with cycle lanes!

Oh

It was utter chaos, they’ve created purpose built bottle necks entering the Marine Parade roundabout from the A23 and A259 Kemp Town side, Church Street had traffic jams today also as people heading west use this rat run instead.

Utter ***** who designed this , they need to make themselves accountable now.

What bothers me, is the lack of patience in drivers at the roundabout. Every day this week cars have pushed onto the roundabout when the lights on the other side are red, and the cars are already backed up to the roundabout, leading to them parking on the roundabout, causing a block for the other cars that could have joined the roundabout and moved on with their journey.

EDIT: I realise that my concept of time is a little off since we're only tuesday, so for 'every day this week' read 'each of the past seven days'

In fairness though, if you've had to wait 15-20 minutes just to get to the roundabout, I'd imagine patience will have been wearing very, very thin by then.

Email for anyone who can be arsed to make a complaint or question wtf they were thinking.

Thank you email sent, they’ve really ****ed this up because the bottlenecks which are causing the problems are needed, I have no clue how they will resolve this all the time the “temp “ bike lane is there, traffic jams at 2pm from Pier all the way back to the level!!!

Its INSANE that the council didn't recognise that this would happen. Utterly insane

Conversely, if you've had to wait 15-20 minutes already, what's one more minute if it reduces the frustrations of other drivers?

Any time motoring lanes are reduced to allow for a cycle lane there is going to be a period of adjustment like this.

It will take being stuck in a load of traffic for people to think, "next time I travel through Brighton at peak time, I might have to do it in a more sustainable way".

This was entirely predictable and predicted and in my view worth it in the long term.

I don't disagree, but we are talking about human nature. Being deliberately stitched up in a traffic jam while an entire lane next to you lays empty and unused is immensely frustrating. If its roadworks then you kind of accept it as one of those things, maintenance has to be carried out some time. But when its done deliberately to stitch you up (being as the seafront is already very well serviced by cycle lanes), then frankly I'm not overly surprised if some drivers end up in full-on Michael Douglas Falling Down mode by the time they hit that roundabout.

This cycle lane looked hair-brained when I walked alongside it on Saturday. Now the full horrors of it are coming to pass. Great to see the emergency services caught up in all the carnage as well.

Well.
Done.
Everyone.

It wasn't even at peak time. It was from around 2pm onwards, on a grey midweek non-school afternoon. We haven't even seen the start of this yet.

I have stopped shopping in Brighton because of the parking charge hikes and the obsession with stopping traffic in the city centre. I go to Crawley now. It's a shame, because i love Brighton.

Really can't see that, too much of a main route. We'll see...

The worst bit for me is the decision was made when there is also a major hospital nearby whose ambulances frequently use that road, and will continue to have to for lack of other routes across town from that location (as for thousands others from there and further east Saltdean, Peacehaven etc)

I guess if you're going to have an accident or a heart attack in Brighton now, you'd best make sure you are in the vicinity of around 2 miles+ EAST of that Sealife roundabout, or you're just going to have to be struggling and hanging on for a while.

A great leveller all these moves by BHCC (Madeira Drive, OSR and the A259).

Until now taxi drivers, the emergency services, those fighting for their lives in ambulances and buses weren’t affected by the imposition of bus lanes.

Now literally anything with four wheels is stuck in city wide gridlock for an eternity.

I wonder if the recorded levels of airborne toxins in the city have spiked?
