We want some our best minds as politicians, they should be fairly rewarded

Do we really need the most brilliant minds? I'd be happy with some regular and normal people thanks. You don't need to be Einstein to sort out most of the current issues...just some common sense and an understanding of the real world.

Fair point but some of the best minds have common sense and an understanding of the real world. These arent run of the mill jobs, or shouldnt be, they should be some of the most challenging roles in our society.

well yes, the basic income needs to be rebased. any rise should be automatically inline with a blended civil service/public sector increase.

I am less interested in annual increases, rather the absolute pay. They are underpaid for their role

Yes, I think we do; if these people **** up then we also suffer. Besides, 650 MPs earning £72K is a negligible portion of the total pay to UK public sector workers.

I think they need to be put on performance related pay scales.

We suffer if they don't **** up. We don't need brilliant minds anywhere near as much as we need integrity, transparency, nobility and honesty.

Some of our best minds are scientists and doctors. Most wont get paid what the politicians do and it still does not stop people working in those fields.

Of course. Although many scientists and doctors will earn farn more than politicians. And we have some great minds in politics now. But we could have more. There are c650 MPs and over 150k doctors. I would have every MP earning enough in salary to be paid at the top marginal rate. As are many scientists and doctors.

Doctors get paid more than MPs as do plenty of engineers that I know.

good to form, the ranters are ignoring the background of the story. nevermind about 5 year pay freeze and a committee deciding the pay award two years ago.

Problem here is with your post and you know around 200 MP,s employ their spouse on 45K no interveiw,no application form they can employ em so 65K PLUS45 K = 110K seems sorted ???? Unless you want to break the Gravy Train ?

It certainly is a gravy train. Snouts in the trough whilst the poorest in our society suffer the politicians austerity measures. Certainly a case of "We are not in it all together"...

why would you need to interview your spouse, you know if they are capable or not? seriously, do you expect a business owner to interview their wife, children, family friend for a job? or are you saying that special rules must apply to MPs because, having voted them into set the legislation of this country, you dont believe they are trustworthy. if you do believe the latter, their employees should be the least of concerns.
