that would be the sensible way to go forward.
We want some our best minds as politicians, they should be fairly rewarded

Do we really need the most brilliant minds? I'd be happy with some regular and normal people thanks. You don't need to be Einstein to sort out most of the current issues...just some common sense and an understanding of the real world.

well yes, the basic income needs to be rebased. any rise should be automatically inline with a blended civil service/public sector increase.

That is just inflation though?
A source from Wikipedia which shows no real terms increase actually proves mine and Landale's points.
Some of the cleverest people in the world are the most stupid too. I'm above average INTELLIGANCE so I should be an MP
Yes, I think we do; if these people **** up then we also suffer. Besides, 650 MPs earning £72K is a negligible portion of the total pay to UK public sector workers.
Some of our best minds are scientists and doctors. Most wont get paid what the politicians do and it still does not stop people working in those fields.

We suffer if they don't **** up. We don't need brilliant minds anywhere near as much as we need integrity, transparency, nobility and honesty.
good to form, the ranters are ignoring the background of the story. nevermind about 5 year pay freeze and a committee deciding the pay award two years ago.
Problem here is with your post and you know around 200 MP,s employ their spouse on 45K no interveiw,no application form they can employ em so 65K PLUS45 K = 110K seems sorted ? Unless you want to break the Gravy Train ?
Doctors get paid more than MPs as do plenty of engineers that I know.
