Looking again at the wording of that statement it's very odd. It's not really a request to leave, it reads more as a standard 'so long and thanks for everything' written after a transfer had been agreed. It hasn't. Weird.

See Trossard and Cucurella - As soon as a player effectively downs tools - which seems Caicedo has done if he hasn’t turned up for training today - it’s only a matter of time before they are off regardless of contract length. Normally a short period of time too.

We could of course just keep turning down bids. We won’t though.

It seems the club have made it perfectly clear - he’s not for sale this transfer window. They also may have put down a marker about not being messed about - both to players and prospective buyers.

Firstly, as a player you will not get your way by throwing your toys out of the pram, having a hissy fit and refusing to train.

I'm not so sure. How he behaves - and plays - from here could potentially be a red flag to other teams about him (or his 'people' potentially pulling similar stunts with them.

My hunch? He'll still be here and it will all be forgotten (ish) until the summer when he WILL move. And he will still put in the effort because he doesn't want to be overlooked by potential suitors.

And this is exactly why players put in transfer requests or play up. It allows the owners to sell the player without getting grief from the supporters. If Trossard was a hardworking model pro and then sold for 27m, we'd all be peed off with TB and the rest of the club for sanctioning that - way too cheap, why are we letting a great player leave now? But because we're flinging the blame at Trossard many are saying we got a good deal. It's clever from the player and his agents.

That rather assumes the owners want to sell the player in the first place. I don’t think Albion had ang desire to move on Trossard or Caicedo in the middle of our best ever season.

Yeah I agree losing your best players does go on at every level. Lewes lost Ollie Tanner last year, but I wasn't gutted I was pleased for him. Even if they'd lost half the squad, it wouldn't have been the end of the world, because watching those clubs isn't about being the best team in the country. It's more like football used to be.
