I can't ruddy believe this - to make amends, I am sat in my home shirt in front of the Man City DVD. I have a feeling we may get a decent result...

Micky Adams said that the match was called unplayable by the groundsman at 11:30. Ref said match was playable. But will make final decision at 1pm. 1pm called off

Ref was wrong, club was correct.

Ref at fault for not listening to someone who knows the ground conditions inside out and accepting his superior local knowledge.

So if it had been called off at 11:30 you lot would have been moaning that it was called off too early. He waited to see if it was going to get any warmer/more sunlight and it didn't. REALLY not the referee's fault in the slightest.

Northampton fans and team would have left by 11:30 so waiting until 1pm seems to me to be the sensible thing to do.

I was sat in the pub watching the darts, OBVLIVIOUS to the decision until I got a call at 2.25 to say it was off (just before I was about to leave for the game).

What a BOLLOCKS world we live in now. Whats happened to the days when football would still be played on SNOW with an orange ball ? Fans helping to clear the pitch, groundsmen clearing the snow from the pitch markings, orange ball and all that. BRILLIANT.

Nowadays a mach gets called off because its a bit CHILLY. Has anyone ever DIED because the pitch is a bit hard ? f***ing ridiculous. Today would have been perfectly playable, PERFECTLY playable, if it was 15 years ago. Everyones so "health-and-safety-namby-f***ing-pandy" these days though, its an absolute joke.

Pathetic. With a capital PATH.

I totally agree Easy, we had a cricket match called off 'cos the outfield "wa'snt safe for the players"...it was just abit WET...rubbish...bring back the Orange Ball!

The club has to consider the safety of the fans within the ground who may slip over and then pursue a claim for injuries received. Even professional footballers playing on a frozen pitch could end up breaking a leg which might be career threatening. If the referee inspects the pitch at 12 and decides to do another at 1 , then its his prerogative.

I still think its pathetic thats its been called off anyway, for starters.
But inspecting at 11.30, thinking it dodgy and then delaying till 1pm before finally deciding, was a completely BONE decision whatever way you slice it. The temperature was only ever going to DROP the longer the afternoon went on - if he thought it was doubtful at 11.30, it would certainly have been "unplayable" (in the refs mind) by 3-4pm when the suns going in and temperatures are dropping.

SPACKTARDED decision.

So the groundsman should be left totally out of the decision making?

The ref was TOTALLY at fault. He was told (I assume)) that the sun would be lower, it would not get warmer in mid winter, and the match would be unplayable at 11:30.

HE chose to ignore everybody, and was proved to have made a complete f*** up.

Apart from anything else, he was responsible for thousands of people starting their journeys after declaring the match on after the first inspection!

I'm not moaning.

I got a free train trip in to Brighton to get my Walsall and Luton tickets.:clap2: [I caught train after match was ON, then only found it it is was OFF when in Station Hotel at PP at 1.30]

but nothing would've changed in that hour thats the point of this blatantly poor decision by the Ref.

Groundsman do have a say but obviously not the final decision, not sure how much in Football but in Cricket we consult with the Umpires alot even with impending weather changes during a match. Even though NO ONE knows the correct full story here I would guess the Groundsman would've said No from the start, so the Ref in changing his mind just one hour later is now made to look like a total twat!

Myself and a few other stewards looked at the pitch when we signed in at 10am and all said then that it would fail inspection. Was shocked when the ref said that the game was on.
Was only part of the pitch covered by McLeod's team shirt ?

I know you are not a safety officer, but if the game had been left on, were the stands and steps (South Stand) unsafe?

Or didn't you hear anything?

When did I say that? Who is better to evaluate the safety of the players? A gardener or a trained referee?

If the game was debatable at midday which it obviously was as he didn't call it off there and then, it make sense to leave it an hour to see which way the temperature goes.

Obviously it got no better in an hour so he had no choice but to call it off.

Both, infact the Groundstaff will know shitloads more than the Ref I can assure you!

Of course, it would be the referee, but the groundsman in his wisdom said the match would be unplayable and had the players interest at heart!

He didn't call it off, but he said that the match would be ON, hence the Press release stating as much with no further notice given as to a further planned inspection

It will probably take place now, when it's pissing down :(

"It is 1pm and if the match kicked-off now it would probably be playable but by 3pm it will only get colder."

BULL SHIT . If they started then the players running round on it would stop it freezing!!

Moronic post as are most on this thread.

So when will this game be played?

I very much suspect it will be sometime in the future!!!!!!!

Was the ref under pressure from the club via the groundstaff to call it off.

Why cant all ground inspections be made at 12 noon and the decision taken stick to even if the weather changes. In most cases the refs will take the safety angle and call it off and yes some will get upset if the weather does improve but better to be safe than sorry and avoid supporters travelling or at least reduce their wasted travelling.

Because if a match was called off at 12 and was subsequently deemed playable by 3 you would be on here moaning about that.

gutted did the same for me n me lad, he's been proper excited...never mind!!!
will we be able to afford to put the underground heating on when we get to Falmer??

Thought they have already stated we will not have underground heating as the records show the costs are prohibitive bearing in mind how many games have been called off for frost in the last 30 odd years.

I was sat in the pub watching the darts, OBVLIVIOUS to the decision until I got a call at 2.25 to say it was off (just before I was about to leave for the game).

Perhaps you should learn the difference between snow and frost. Go and throw yourself into a pile of snow, note the consequences and then throw yourself at a frozen football pitch.

Some of you lot are complete penises!

How is this the anyone's fault?

According to someone off here (ALWAYS reliable) there was a pitch inspection at midday. If true then clearly the ref has said lets re-evaluate in an hour which he's done, it's obviously not got any better so he's called it off. Not the refs fault, not the club's fault, just one of those things.

I was going to Crowborough V Worthing today and that is off, Eastbourne is off, I'm sure loads of games across Sussex are off! It's cold outside!!

How many more moronic posts - no, wait a minute, you're the one talking sense. Wasn't expecting that on NSC!

The ref has to make the final decision. Also, what would happen if a ref called a game off purely because of groundstaff recommendation only to find the home team couldn't field their strongest team and wanted the game delayed anyway!!!

So if it had been called off at 11:30 you lot would have been moaning that it was called off too early. He waited to see if it was going to get any warmer/more sunlight and it didn't. REALLY not the referee's fault in the slightest.

moronic, moronic, moronic. Oh, sorry, you again, apologies as you seem to be talking sense again.

On a general point, was anyone here present at any of the inspections and if so, did the ref definitely state the game was on or did he state he would review the conditions?

Personally, I am not bothered that it is off as I would much prefer to go to an evening game which has better atmosphere (cold or not), just bad luck on those with distances to travel who had already set off.

I think what has pissed most people off is the fact that the club website and all other forms of media were carrying the story that the game was definitely on after a pitch inspection at 12pm. Surely if the ref/club were still doubtful the story should have been "game in doubt, further inspection due at 1pm?"

Exactly. No one said there was to be another inspection at 1.0pm. It was "game on". I would not have left home at 1.15 if i had known there was a 1.0pm inspection until I knew the verdict.
