Coronavirus: 'R' infection number as high as 1 after rising over past week, SAGE says:

Do they know what their doing?

With respect that article clearly states that the data includes care homes and hospitals, that really shouldn’t be taken into consideration when you’re talking about the level of community infection.
An elderly person in a care home is not going to infect anyone outside of that care home !

For all those thinking it's all over, London is almost free, and that there is no danger of a second wave:

However, claims there are now just 24 cases a day in the capital and that it could soon be free of the virus have been slammed.

There were in fact 49 people admitted to London hospitals with Covid-19 yesterday and likely hundreds of cases that did not need hospital treatment.

"I am extremely worried about the media message that London could be coronavirus free in days," said Prof Matt Keeling, from the University of Warwick.

He added: "If people think London is coronavirus-free that could be dangerous, and could lead to complacency, undermining all the struggles and sacrifices that everyone has made so far. A relaxation of vigilance could easily see R increasing above 1, and a second epidemic wave."

Even 49 new cases is massively good news in a population of 9m people !
As for the fact hundreds of cases that did not need treatment.....hasn’t that been the same from the start ? I’d go as far as to say at the peak there were probably thousands of cases that didn’t need hospital treatment.

I took a walk up to Northcote Road near Clapham Junction just now. That's the furthest I've been since a fortnight before the lockdown.

Yes I was making it worse, but it's almost back to normal. Not much of an attempt as social distancing either.

The shops are still doing their best to limit people inside. Once you are in there though, people couldn't give a f###.

I prefer a small local garage Sainsbury's where you even get told off if you don't use the one way system :)

The management in there have since day one have been proactively protecting staff and customers and have kept it up.

Crikey, if it’s like that on a sunny, cool, Friday in Seaford, then Brighton and Hove and other resorts are going to be busy this coming warm weekend.

Not so much crowded, but very little sign of people trying to stay a distance from others. It was (in my opinion) a combination of 'couldn't give a feck' and 'I've no idea what day of the week it is' people ... whatever it was it was, by a long way, the worst I've seen it

On our daily bike ride today over the Downs from Brighton, it was back to pre-covid normal really. On the Saddlescombe Road overtaken by countless car and vans. My guess would be a combination of the building sector is in full swing again (I know a fair number of tradesmen and developers), and folk visiting the Poynings garden centre.

For about three weeks ending a month ago, cycling was a once in a lifetime paradise of next to no vehicles.

Agree and without any doubt the lockdown did its job,its next week or 2 we'll see figures for when people been going back to work this week.

Of course they do, but the narrative from certain posters is that the R-rate shouldn't include people from care homes and hospitals. Why it shouldn't they never really bother to explain. I'd hesitate to say that they're enjoying Social Darwinism in action, but that's what they're advocating.

thats quite unfair. the R number is supposed to be representitive of the infection rate within the population. if we narrow in on groups, you'll get a distorted view of the whole population. the numbers should include care homes weighted to the proportion of the population, and apparently this isnt what has happened.

Went by the garden centre just outside Newhaven today....gawd the queue...no thanks!

Yep roads busy.....but predictably so....obviously trade will be in their vehicles...and others have been advised not to use public transport....so its inevitable

We’re just a 5 minute drive to that Poynings garden centre. But I didn’t see the point of either getting up very early to join pensioners who love being beating queues, or later on joining a huge queue. The indoor cafe is closed, so it’s purely to buy stuff. I’ve twice recently bought compost from Homebase (a small queue) and plants online, so all is good.

There’s another nearby place I go to that’s sells perennials, normally opening in June. Another sauce that I’ll do me fine.

Other than your garden maintenance work, do you plan and plant for clients?

I’m generally a tidy upper ...some gardens...blocks of flats...housing estate and graveyard :moo:
...but I do get the opportunity to do some planting ...bigger stuff tends to be hedging ..smaller pots and beds....for the former i go online and use a trade account ..the latter up until recently I used a local nursery but it closed last year ..pity as I got great prices...this year I’ve started to use someone in Mileoak and although not as great a choice it’s been convenient as I can get my stuff by calling by at the end of day and they sort my compost too....I’ll carry on using them in the future as it’s a time saver

I do the shopping at the Tesco Express a couple of miles away. At 6am. I can wander round freely. They even look pleased to see me, poor sods.

Only takes 1 person to cough/sneeze on a tube carriage and 15 could be infected that 1 person would make the R rate 15 for that particular point. Country wide R rate wouldn't change

Ice cream van arrived on our road yesterday. Kids and parents started mingling around the van, no distance between people. CV has finished in some peoples minds. It upset our 5 year old daughter that she couldn't get an Ice Cream, better safe than sorry. Hope we don't mess this up at the last minute.
