Stones
Maguire
Colwill
Guehi
Dunk?
Guehi isn't going to go to a tournament for the same reason Dunk hasn't gone to a tournament previously - Southgate clearly believes strongly in only taking people who're playing for clubs performing in the top 7. If Guehi was doing what he's doing at say West Ham or Villa, he'd probably be there.

As I said on the other thread, I don't think Southgate will only take 2 CBs over the age of 23. I think his choice is between Dunk & Tomori for one of the backup CB spots and for whatever reason, he doesn't seem to fancy Tomori

Will depend on injuries to get a place in the squad imho also needs good finish to the season. He was bad and would in general be a weakness. Love Dunk but he is not a starter in a team winning international tournament

As a Brighton fan I think he's brilliant. I want him to do well for club and country.,

But I can also look at it objectively as a fan of England, removing the brighton spectacles.......and I would rather see the likes of Tomori, Guehi, Konsa, Quansah, Branthwaite(I'm certain he will be THE next long-standing England CB), Colwill, Gomez etc in the squad over a 32(?) year old centre back. Maguire and Stones have the starting spot nailed down so for me personally I'd rather have the younger players in there.

That's before I get onto the fact that Dunk has....you know......had a couple of clangers in there.

Dunk's role in the squad, as the elder backup centre back would be to provide Southgate with some assurance that there is a calm, experienced head to put into the line up if he loses one of his two starters. See Connor Coady in previous squads. Sadly, the defensive errors will not help that one bit. The going to ground against Lukaku last night was just odd. That will mean far more to Southgate than any contribution further up the pitch.

I think he'll make the initial long-list training squad but not make the final 23.

Southgate does seem to favour experience in his centre-backs though, which works in Dunk's favour, but Tomori's case has probably only become stronger after the last couple of games. His exclusion from this squad was slightly baffling.
He’s played about 3 games in 3 months because of injury.

Last WC squad included:

Pickford (Everton)
Coady (Wolves/Everton)
Maddison (leicester)
Wilson (newcastle were struggling from what I remember)

Previous Euros squad included:

Pickford
Rice (west ham were not good)
Grealish (villa were not good)
Ramsdale (sheff utd)
Phillips (Leeds)
Coady (Wolves)
Calvert Lewin (Everton)
Ben White (Brighton)
Johnstone (West Brom)

Also....better players tend to play for the better teams....

Last WC squad included:

Pickford (Everton) - When Southgate started picking him in 2017 Everton were a top 7 side.
Coady (Wolves/Everton) - Finished in the top 7 in 18/19 and 19/20...
Maddison (leicester) - Finished 5th 19/20 and 20/21...
Wilson (newcastle were struggling from what I remember) - Backup striker...

Previous Euros squad included:

Pickford - See above
Rice (west ham were not good)
Grealish (villa were not good)
Ramsdale (sheff utd) - Goalkeeper
Phillips (Leeds)
Coady (Wolves) - See above
Calvert Lewin (Everton) - Backup striker...
Ben White (Brighton)
Johnstone (West Brom) - Goalkeeper

Also....better players tend to play for the better teams....

I don't really know why you've listed out a load of backup strikers & goalkeepers, its a very different equation to defenders.

So Lewis made a couple of errors in the 2 games, but I thought he had an excellent game against Scotland. I noticed that a lot of the time, he, like the rest of the back four were playing keep ball amongst themselves, so I wonder if he doesnt feel he is able to bring the ball out of defence like he seems to do at club level. That back 4 looked like it was - never played with each other before.
I think Lewis probably played himself out of the Euros, alongside Chilwell, Konza and Gomez, who all looked decidedly average as well
The one thing Lewis does offer is a threat at corners.
And for all the "fans" on Twitter enjoying his mistakes, its England, and I support players like Kane and Rashford, who I would hate at club level, but support playing for their country

WTF?
Konsa played last night and v Brazil and was bang average.
I agree re Braithwaite and think Southgate missed a huge opportunity to see what he could do, but I think Southgate is woefully out of his depth so not surprised.
Guehi, err why?
Quansah? You’d rather take a teenage CB who has played about 4 senior matches, playing next to Virgil f***ing VanDyke, than the captain of an established EPL team now in Europe with over 400 matches in his locker? Give your head a wobble.

Last night Dunk actually played quite well, however he made a big error, not much bigger than the errors that Maguire made v Brazil (and countless in other games) but still a big error that people will remember. He’s had a difficult season, not helped by injuries.

Foster went to Spain in ‘82 and if distant memory serves didn’t kick a ball in anger, but I was super proud, even as an 11 year old! I think Dunk will go to Germany as a back up CB and he deserves to.

FWIW if any manager is going to overlook a bit of bad form and a few mistakes, then it’s Gareth Southgate. Still think Dunk has a good chance of making the squad this summer.

Because you were saying why Guehi (a backup defender to Maguire and Stones) wouldn't be selected. It's quoted below to help.

Guehi isn't going to go to a tournament for the same reason Dunk hasn't gone to a tournament previously - Southgate clearly believes strongly in only taking people who're playing for clubs performing in the top 7.
Also my list included the starting goalkeeper twice and some defenders including Brighton's Ben White.....and midfielder Kalvin Phillips who started the opening game for Euro 2020 despite playing for Leeds, having been in the Championship the season before (I believe Southgate selected Phillips for England whilst playing in the Championship)

I'm just listing the profile of defenders I'd prefer in an England squad ahead of a 32 year old with limited international exposure when considering future planning. However we have a real drop off in experienced centre backs after Maguire and Stones so Dunk will likely get in there for the tournament. in fact, I'd say he's relatively certain to go due to lack of options. The players I've listed also hugely lack in international experience, so a tournament isn't the time to start experimenting. Dunk will go. I'm pretty sure of it.

I wasn't talking about this squad as such. More having the future planning in place.

I am not quite sure what the 'WTF' was about and I appreciate the hugely worn out 'head wobble' advice.

For this squad Maguire got injured, I understand Tomori has been injured, as has Guehi.

That's why I listed LOADS of examples of younger centre backs I'd like to see as the backup to Maguire and Stones going forwards so you'd pick the most suitable 2 from that list. Probably Branthwaite and Colwill after the tournament if they were fit.. Konsa being 5th choice cb.

Wonderful dribble in midfield, coming in from the wing, towards the end of the game. I remember thinking you won’t see Maguire doing anything like that. Not that it will make any difference, he still won’t start for England. Stones and Dunk would make it worth watching England. Sigh!
