Unfortunately, he's been picked too late! Been excellent for years but overlooked, now, picked when he's not in good form and those odd mistakes are very costly(for us and now for England)

He’s always had those mistakes in him against physical strikers. Mitrovic always had a field day with Dunk when we played Fulham.

I was watching Wales on S4C wondering why less than third ppl in Wales speak Welsh yet there was no English commentry.

I used to work in Treforest back in the '90s, and opinions among the locals on S4C were decidedly mixed - mainly because they couldn't understand the Welsh content. Though one of my colleagues was a part-time actress who appeared in Pobol Y Cwm.

Similar to the mistake against Roma and the same player. Struggles against pace and power, luckily most players have one or the other. Seemed edgy throughout the match, shame, we know he’s better than this.

Agreed. Just a shame that his most consistent time in the England squad has been in the one season when he’s really not been at his best for us.

I think that's more on GS than LD. Typically overlooked when playing the best football of his career. Called up now when in the worst form of the last 3-4 years. The fact he got 90 mins last night says it's game over. Lukaku gave him the fear. No idea why he went to ground. 2 mistakes that led to goals in 2 games. 0 wins, first loss in 20 games. A shame, but not euro's quality performances.

Fitted in with the England defence perfectly, which is not the greatest compliment, thought the whole backline looked dodgy and let's not forget Pickfords howler.
I still think there is a chance for Dunk any decent competition for places seems injured and with Southgate it's difficult to be dropped no matter how many mistakes you make.

As I said on a different thread. So much luck involved. Maguire dropped a clanger vs Brazil and put a bloke through for one on one. Dunk makes mistake on halfway line and we concede then lukaku crosses one like Beckham. In either scenario they could easily not have scored as they didn’t with far easier chance gifted by Maguire. It happens.

Let’s hope he shows how good he can be vs Liverpool.

Selfishly, at this stage of his career, I’d prefer he has the summer off and comes back refreshed next season. I’ve felt he may not be fully fit for a lot of this season (RDZ spoke about needing to ‘manage his minutes’). I wonder if he’s playing with injections or something like that. I appreciate Lewis probably doesn’t feel the same way.

I really feel for him, I mean in 9 occasions out of 10, that error would come to nothing, as how on earth has Lukaku come up with the most sublime cross of his life (outside of the boot and perfectly weighted) plus it arrived absolutely perfectly on Tielemans head (who also could easily have messed that up, but connected perfectly). I'd also question who from midfield was meant to be picking up Tielemans and where were they, as he was totally unmarked. So, on most other occasions that incident would not have resulted in a goal.

I still think he might go simply because of the lack of options. If we assume Stones and Maguire are certs for the squad there’s probably 2-3 slots up for grabs and not a lot of options to fill them.

He gave away the second goal after attempting a slide tackle, lost the ball to Lukaku who then crossed for Tielemans to score. He’s now had a role to play in 2 conceded goals in 2 games this international break.

Selfishly I'd agree with this.

He can't have enjoyed playing in that game. Rice kept coming back so deep and getting on his toes. And the sort of movement Brighton's front payers offer for a long pass doesn't happen with England - because it isn't part of the way they play. Instead the likes of Rice run the ball through midfield. Dunk is left skulking around on the left, occasionally receiving and giving a short ball. Even the keeper is a bit of a hoofer so no pinging the ball around the back. And with the lack of defensive structure he was caught out on several occasions. If Dunk had simply been removed yesterday it would have barely affected the game.

Lewis Dunk slipped but got to his feet to mark Lukaku who pulled out a worldie, outside of his left foot, to put a perfect cross in for the completely unmarked Tielemans. Lukaku didn’t have a shot on target all game and yet it’s Dunks fault we only drew. The narrative is set and there will be plenty of people pronouncing the perceived wisdom of “he’s got a mistake in him.” Anyone who hasn’t made a mistake has never tried to do anything.

it’s actual a real kryptonite of his. mitrovic, toney, antonio, calvert-lewin, adebayo, weghorst, lukaku, awoniyi, wood, muniz all names that have dominated him in a game at some point in recent years.

something that needs looked at in terms of recruiting new centre backs to help with this obvious weakness, although JPVH seems to deal with these players a bit better

I’ve said this so many times now and for years - Pickford having great distribution is one of the biggest myths in the game. He’s a bang average mid-table keeper, one of the worst regular no1 keepers England have ever had. Yet another mystery from that fraud of a manager to go alongside the likes of Maguire, Dier, Chilwell, Rashford etc who should have been replaced years ago but this prick is ‘loyal’ to.
Personally I don’t want any Albion player anywhere near Southgate. A massive shame for Dunky as in 21/22 & 22/23 he was the top English CB behind Stones.

If I take off my BHA glasses for a minute then why on earth didn’t Southgate give Braithwaite a run last night?

As long as our skipper came through these pointless "FA fundraisers" unscathed, I'm totally unconcerned about his performances and the team's results.

He has been treated shabbily by the waistcoat wanker. So long as he is fit and healthy for the run-in, that is good enough for me.

Dunk actually had a pretty decent game last night, bar the single costly mistake.

Better than Gomez who had an utter shocker, or Bellingham (which will be entirely glossed over as he got the late goal).

Sadly though, (my) analysis of the mistake is a little damning - Dunk stretched for the ball off balance simply because he didn't trust his pace to get to it ahead of Lukaku while staying on his feet. His relative lack of pace is a definite weakness (shared by many of the other options, to be fair).
