Not a direct pop at Labour, more a general observation without needing yet another politics thread. One of the discussions that's been had recently down my way is why we pander to prisoners so much, I know we want to avoid disturbances etc. but surely there's an alternative to releasing early. Can we not just put more people into a cell, is there really a need for a single cell each a la Roy Cropper ?. I'll admit that I don't know if this is the case at all prisons but the first bit of research I did said prisoners have a single cell with toilet and shower (Send Prison in Woking). I'm not talking about creating South American style conditions before anyone jumps in but prison should be as tough as possible.

Sir Keir Starmer has said that a Labour government would "in all likelihood" need to continue the early release of prisoners due to overcrowding in jails.

The Labour leader accused the Conservative government of creating a prisons crisis by not building enough new prisons.

The prison population has ballooned in recent decades as a result of tougher sentences and court backlogs.

Speaking to BBC political editor Chris Mason, Sir Keir said he could not "magic up a new prison on Friday morning" if elected as prime minister this week.

Starmer being tackled on taking £76K of "freebies" (including 16K of free clothes). All quite properly declared and registered. But it just isn't a good look. He has his snout in the freebie trough and he hasn't actually won the GE yet.

Starmer put most of it down to "Arsenal hospitality" because he has to go corporate because its not safe for him to go in the stands.

He does realise that he could actually PAY for corporate hospitality doesn't he?

He has done absolutely nothing "wrong". But after 14 years of Tories only in it for what they can get out, it really isn't good is it? I thought he was smarter than that. (I'm sure HWT will be along shortly to tell us how much Corbyn took in "freebies" in the run-up to 2019 GE)

it's quite expensive to keep someone in prison- it's not just a case of having enough space you need adequate staffing as well, food etc

Chris Grayling privatising the Probation Service messing it up, and having to renationalise it again didn’t help as prisoners entitled to parole couldn’t have probation reports made up, nor was privatising prisons.
Backlogs and delays take a long time to sort out. It won’t happen quickly.

Fair. I hadn't thought of the training needed for staffing increases etc. I'd happily contribute my share of additional tax to meet that cost if we could show that's what was needed.
