On principle no he shouldn't step down or give up his captains armband for this. It's not like a teacher or policeman being suspended whilst investigated for something related to their job.

If it's affecting other players on the pitch when England play then yes he should for the good of the team (for what it's worth, they are shit whatever though so it won't make much difference).

Hi wont stand down - he should be dropped coz he is rubbish - capello will pick him coz he is a donk - we will be eliminated in the group stages and return a laughing stock. Harry will get the england job but the squad will have to train at ford open prison - poyet will go to spurs they will win the premiership 2012/2013 with CMS scoring the winner as he deflects in a 35 yard KLL pile driver past the happless Gonzalez in the Man City Goal. Happy days.

I've said it before, I'll say it again .... I don't understand why we have a nominated England captain that needs to be sacked, or resign, or appointed. It's not cricket, he's not part of teh selection panel, he is just the guy who leads the team out.

Why doesn't the squad get named, then the team, and from that team the manager decides who will be captain. That just does away with all this nonsense, as well as all teh futile debate we'll have about who should succeed him if he does stand down / get sacked.

Why? I just don't understand the need of it.
Exactly, it should be a complete non-issue. Capello was amazed when he found out how obsessed the English were about the captaincy, as was Sven before him.

Don't be thick. He is potentially being forced to stand down for something he claims vociferously he didn't do. Pretty obvious debate.
Nothing thick about it. He's toxic for plenty of reasons other than this. And past it. He's captain because of past reputation, a percieved bulldog attitude which gets us absolutely f***ing nowhere time after time and bizarrely it seems Capello is a little intimidated by this. His performances for England and Chelsea recently are going to have the likes of Spain, Holland and Germany licking their lips. Again. Oh, and please don't call me thick, that's childish :albion2:

Should stand down to avoid this issue dominating and distracting from the Euros. hopefully he will see this is the best course of action for the team.

its just typical though that all of the build up to Euro 2012 will be about Terry once again, and whether or not he should be captain and what the other players are saying! its all a massive distraction to what is actually going on and for that reason I would leave him at home and avoid it all!! the fact that he has managed to delay the trial until after the euro's says a lot to me! he knows that there would be no chance of him playing in the tournament if he was found guilty before it, so from his selfish point of view and deep pockets he has managed to delay it to suit him!!

I feel nauseous at the thought of the bloke lifting a trophy for our country. I think we have been here before. It is unlikely of course - but part of me will want us to lose should it come about. And I don't say that lightly.

Exactly, it should be a complete non-issue. Capello was amazed when he found out how obsessed the English were about the captaincy, as was Sven before him.

For me, it was Sven that let it grow into the big deal it is today. I never remember there being a fraction of this fuss prior to Beckham. I know it was PT who first named him England capt, but Sven allowed him to elevate the importance of the role the way he did.

Unfortunately, I think the FA played a large part as well, because they fostered the whole poster-boy element of Beckham. He was the face of the team, he led all the advertising, and why not, he's a pretty boy and looks like his SELL. I can't see that we would have done the same if Martin Keown has been captain.

But post-Beckham, having the captain leading the promotions etc is not so easy, as it's not very often that teh best player to be captain is also the most marketable. It's certainly not the case with John Terry.

I just wish we'd dispense with this nonsense, and tbh, NOW seems as good a time as any, since Capello took over - which was the perfect time. he could have walked in, and said "meh, don't believe in that, I'll name my skipper once I've decided on the team."

Interesting how this compares to England's new Rugby set up, where any whiff of any kind of scandal, proven or not, and you're basically out of there.

Even if he believes he's innocent, he should step down (even if temporarily), saying that he's doing so as whole thing is proving a huge distraction to the rest of the team.
