Russia probably couldn't believe their luck over Brexit, the UK voting to weaken itself and the EU simultaneously with only a minimum amount of investment and effort from Moscow. Their next target will be the break-up of the UK and the consequent loss of our status as a permanent member of the UN security council.

As you allude, it's not luck The amount of Russian 'investment' in the different leave factions and the 'ad' campaigns they funded through Steve Bannon and Cambridge Analytica made all the difference.

....

I wouldn’t fret too much though, nothing you can do, except develop stomach ulcers or make yourself sick with worry as I did as a kid re: protect and survive pamphlets/public info films. That never cam to pass thankfully but I was sacred stiff thinking about it at the time.

Oh indeed. Did you have the person come round to your school telling you what to do in the event of a nuclear war? You had to stock up on dried and tinned food, and to ensure fresh water you should fill up the bath before war is declared - and then take off the bathroom door and lay it on top of the tub. That would stop the radioactive dust from contaminating your water supply.

That all assumed that we'd get some notice. It was extremely possible civilisation would end, not due to a diplomatic incident escalating out of control, but due to some systems failure. The USA and the USSR, both with enough firepower to reduce the world to radioactive ash many times over, constantly monitoring each other, each expecting the other to launch a sneak attack. We were only ever a few human/computer errors away from Armageddon.

The fact that at any given moment we were only ever a few hours away from the planet being a radioactive wasteland did give me some nightmares! None of the current threats facing us today comes close to that level of dread.

Johnson's lack of intellect makes him extremely dangerous indeed. That is why I was so angered that Starmer didn't lead the Labour Party to defeat him in Parliament when he had the chance. The "national interest" was to rid us of our lying, corrupt, incompetent PM before he had the chance to do further damage to our country.

Johnson is not a joke; he is a danger.

Can highly recommend 'Command and Control' by Eric Schlosser.

It's the history of nuclear weapons, of the various systems of command and control that are in place and also details just how close we've come to obliteration on a number of occasions.

There's a horrifying story about how an early detection system alerted that a salvo of missiles had been fired from Russia...which turned out to be the system picking up the moon. Bonkers.

I expect Putin would be pleased that many on here are more interested in scoring domestic party political points rather than focusing on the real villain.

Someone will be along in a minute claiming this is what we voted for in 2016 [emoji1787]

I think Putin is feeling emboldened by the EU's weak Lilly livered response to his possible actions. So much for a United front of Europe. Shat themselves at the 1st hurdle

Complete and utter cock up by Germany and the EU, who invited Russia to spend and build a £16 billion gas pipe line then tell Russia it can't use it,, no one's actually going to help Ukraine with anything else than moral support who are taking full advantage of the situation to try and become a part of nato to become very military strategic on the Russian doorstep, just hope Germany and the EU completely run out of natural gas if the tit for tat sanctions begin

Well we already had a Clown earlier suggesting that Boris sent the RN to the Chanel to defend us from NATO so I guess anything is possible, I wonder if said clown knows that the current Flagship of NATO’s response force is one of our Aircraft Carriers [emoji2357]

Given Johnson's history of dithering, we will be defeated even before he has decided to ask his Russian backers what he should do,

Thanks to de pfeffel et al we no longer have a voice in world politics.

BoJo, Wee Jimmy Krankie, Gully it really makes no difference who speaks for us.

With all due respect Wee JK can string a whole sentence together and speaks more sense in 30s after 2 bottles of scotch (std breakfast in HolyRood apparently) than BJ ever has in his entire life.

How long b4 the French raise the white flag, Germans already have. The is hamstrung by the Gas situation and their total reliance on Russia

Do they have Russian donors funding their ruling party as well?

Any of the detractors want to comment on 'God Save the Queen' trending on Ukrainian twitter?

We are doing far more than most allies, even Germany won't allow our aid to go via their airspace.

And the less said about Sleepy Joe, the better, this would never have happened under the Donald.
