I wonder what would happen to me if I did that at work?

you'd have been reported to the police and probably charged with assualt, and dismissed for gross misconduct. (at which point, if youre in RMT the tube would strike over the treatment of you and you'd suspended on full pay for a year and asked not to do it again)

You dont think I would get suspended for 12 days and fined £7.50 then.

He may be a nice bloke outside of the game (I'll be honest, I doubt it), but anything to do with football just seems to turn him into a nasty, vicious, pompous little twat. Shame he's not banned for longer, deserves it for his many misdemeanours (stubbing a cigarette out on someone?! Should've been sodding charged).

Actually, thinking about it, I may be wrong about the 'may be a nice bloke bit' his Twitter posts (or the ones I see quoted elsewhere, don't use it myself) seem to paint him as a thesaurus raiding wannabe intellectual, possibly trying to play the 'misunderstood genius' card but, again, just coming off as a twat who struggles to understand the fine line between blunt speaking and being inflammatory.

Four matches for the first red (Elbow on Tevez), five matches for the second 'red' (Aguero) and six matches for the third 'red' (Kompany) equals 15 matches so no, not too harsh.

His prison sentence for assault and previous record of stubbing a cigar into a youth team player's eye would suggest he is not so nice off the pitch. And his brother is a racist axe murderer which suggests it runs in the family.

I'd forgotten that beating he dished out to his teammate a while back, and kept punching him while the bloke was unconscious on the floor. To claim 'but he's a nice bloke, one to one' makes people look utter gullible morons now.

I was going to leave the brother bit out, it's a bit too much like saying that just because Giggs is a cheating shite his brother is as well.

In my defence, I backtrack on the 'nice bloke off the pitch' bit in the second paragraph when I remembered his astonishing ability to make himself seem a bigger twat in only 160 characters or less (plus the stubbing cigarettes out, though it's mostly the 'look how clever I am, I know philosophers, that makes the assault thing ok yeah?' that pisses me off).

Reminds me now of a character I'm sure I remember from Viz (although I haven't read it in a good few years) - can't remember the name but it was a Vicotrian gentleman kind of character who was also incredibly violent and alsways getting into fights. Except Barton doesn't really pull off the highbrow side of the character :)

Sounds like a pretty spot on comparison in all fairness...with the possible exception of the Viz character maybe being funny, Barton's just a bit sad really.

This is Barton on the pitch for me, always top drawer entertainment. His sending off at Eastlands was one of the highlights of the season, outstanding. Give me one Barton before 11 James f***ing Milners zzzzzzz.......and afterwards putting dullard-in-chief Shearer in his box was the icing on a virtuoso cake. Bravo.

Older football fans will remember that every club had at least one Bartonesque player, sometimes more - sneaky, gobby, dirty, sly, they usually made them team captain - Lee, Bremner, Souness - but always good value for money. He's a couple of decades too late, that's all

His twitter account is f***ing noddy though

And the assault which put him inside was particularly brutal, he kicked a man unconscious....and then carried on kicking him.

This article is spot on

So this thuggery can be described as entertaining, a highlight, and outstanding?

I'm glad I don't inhabit your football world.
