I was going to leave the brother bit out, it's a bit too much like saying that just because Giggs is a cheating shite his brother is as well.

In my defence, I backtrack on the 'nice bloke off the pitch' bit in the second paragraph when I remembered his astonishing ability to make himself seem a bigger twat in only 160 characters or less (plus the stubbing cigarettes out, though it's mostly the 'look how clever I am, I know philosophers, that makes the assault thing ok yeah?' that pisses me off).

Reminds me now of a character I'm sure I remember from Viz (although I haven't read it in a good few years) - can't remember the name but it was a Vicotrian gentleman kind of character who was also incredibly violent and alsways getting into fights. Except Barton doesn't really pull off the highbrow side of the character

Sounds like a pretty spot on comparison in all fairness...with the possible exception of the Viz character maybe being funny, Barton's just a bit sad really.

Give me one Barton before 11 James f***ing Milners zzzzzzz.......and afterwards putting dullard-in-chief Shearer in his box was the icing on a virtuoso cake. Bravo.

Older football fans will remember that every club had at least one Bartonesque player, sometimes more - sneaky, gobby, dirty, sly, they usually made them team captain - Lee, Bremner, Souness - but always good value for money. He's a couple of decades too late, that's all
