Genuine question - do you think that gave you a balanced and rounded insight into both viewpoints?
Yes i do, the majority , though not all , of the catholic population ( see rory mcilroy) would probably opt for a united ireland , but are realistic enough to know that the republic couldnt afford it, and dont it want enough to want a return to the troubles to get it, james mclean is a hate filled tosser who was SIX when the troubles ended , martin o neill also comes from londonderry too and he wore one and if he has that much of a problem wearing a poppy on his shirt then dont come here and play in our league,, we have to put up with murdering bastards like martin mcguiness and gerry adams swanning round westminster , wearing a poppy on your shirt is not too much to ask if you want to come here and take the money.

Ah, doing two tours. With the British Army. In Northern Ireland. Now i'm sure you were an absolute saint, but if you're pretending they were all sweetness and light during the internment days then well, please spare me that naive bullshit. We all know who they were sent in to protect, but they didn't and their behaviour towards innocent catholics was the biggest free recruitment the IRA could ever have hoped for. But you know that deep down, don't you?
You know nothing , you've studied what at university exactly ? I've been there , seen and done it first hand , you havent.

Actually Bushy, they don't swan around Westminster because they both refuse to swear allegiance to the Queen, and therefore never get to go to the Commons.

Apologies - my question was whether you felt that your tours had given you a balanced insight into both sides of the fence in Northern Ireland, generally, rather than on whether this footballer was within his rights to choose not to wear a poppy. You've every right to your view on that one - just as McLean has his.

How much do you know about this guy? Enough to know that he is a 'hate filled tosser'? Really? Do you know for sure that he didn't have close family, or family freinds badly wronged (in HIS perception) by our forces? Do you know for sure that there isn't a stituation whereby his choosing TO wear the poppy could have very seriously and understandably have offended sections of his community back home?

I don't know enough to castigate him on this to be honest, so I'll continue to defend his right to choose.

(FWIW, I agree with you entirely on Adams, et al. Whilst I understand the need for the deal-making that took place, and that it was ultimately essential to end the bloodshed, their presence in our government remains a lamentable and distasteful situation.)

Think you've summed up my view much more eloquently than I could.

Wrong , they have an office at westminster funded by the taxpayer, you're remarkably liberal and tolerant arent you ? Until something lands on YOUR doorstep, judging by your thread on travelllers in burgess hill last month.

I think this answers HKFC's question.

I know enough to know that his refusal to wear one marks him as a hate filled tosser , o neil wore one and other irish people both from the south and the north wear one , your willingness to give people the benefit of the doubt is wonderful, but it doesnt half become f***ing tiresome when something is staring you in the face and you will still refuse to accept the truth. There are also a lot of other subjects that it would be impossible for you to "know" enough to comment on , but from what i've seen it hasnt stopped you commenting and having a forceful opinion.

Don't let your anger cloud your posting Bushy, I am neither tolerant or Liberal when it comes to anything to do with our Forces, ex or otherwise.

FWIW, I spent yesterday with two of my best mates, One ex Queens wearing his Northern Ireland Medal (1000 days) and the other ex RCT who drove the Bomb Disposal lot around Northern Ireland (In a PIG) and proudly wears his Felix the Cat tie (9 lives) who can both tell stories that would make your teeth curl.

My respect and admiration for both these men is limitless.

Things don't always stare you in the face. Not everything has to be taken at immediate face value. Why assume that just because O'Neill and McLean both hail from NI, that means their perspective has to be the same?

I've got a northern ireland medal as well, i'd feel a little bit silly wearing it all by itself though, coinsidering the chestful that a lot of ex squaddies have now.

Please never feel silly wearing it Bushy, you earned it.

Even though my mates always insist they got it for being the first in the queue for the NAAFI.

The next time you are doing something special, maybe a holiday, your childs birthday, even a visit to the Amex, spare a thought for those young lads that died in agony in a rat-infested trench, or on a cold muddy field in France. Maybe swallowed up by icy seas or burning in a shot-down plane. Many of these men left behind families and many weren`t even old enough to have experienced the magic of fatherhood. These men were fighting a common evil, so f*** McLean and his freedom of choice. We must always remember them.

Best comment I have seen on this thread. Well done Salty.

Have you been there ??

Well I did a few years ago and I was genuinely shocked. I expected England with rain, I didnt expect whole communities ghettoed into bunting, flag waving, kerb painted, vindictive sectarianism, God only knows what it must have been like during the troubles.

Mclean if he wasnt a footballer would no doubt be a Celtic sectarian chanter booing our troops at the pre match display, spewing vile abuse, it comes with territory and of course his Loyalist foes would be doing the exact same thing.

You can look deeper into the history, but it offers little when you see how it has manifested itself into the very fabric of their society.

To then embrace his defiance as some sort principled guy that we need to understand is missing the point.

Bushy must of been in hell at times, but Christ I only went there on holiday a few years ago for a few days and see what its done to me !!!

Brighton - In your face
We shouldn't 'forget' and hopefully we will never forget as remembrance day will continue every year. To try and out-berate someone like this, especially with his local history is blatant 'who can be the most patriotic', and who can wear the biggest poppy. It should never have been introduced into sport as it's got f*** all to do with it.
Jesus. Every weekend is a flaming womens period in the premiership nowadays and the media love it, and we mop it up. Get over it.
