It WAS a pen

It's not ifs and buts tho. If it was the wrong decision and no pen it's still 1-0 to us. I'd say 75% chance we'd win / 20% a draw / 5% a Rochdale win IMO. You do seem to pick on a lot of fairly logical posts to disagree. This is far different from a ref sending someone off dubiously or awarding a dubious pen it is a black and white rule so it's not really ifs and buts

So why is it different when we were 2-1 up later in the half with less time to go (Surely meaning less chance of conceding)? The ifs and buts I'm referring to are what MAY have happened had the penalty not been given. No one knows. We could have lost 1-3. We just don't know.

Even you have said "assuming it's a wrong decision", so it's not black and white.

Who's to say they wouldn't have scored direct from the freekick and equalised anyway?

I really am not trying to be difficult and think that yes the ref may have made a mistake, but we overcame it (going 2-1), and then shot ourselves in the foot. I don't think it's right to keep harping on about the referee, who may indeed still have got it right seeing as we can't see a proper replay of the incident.

I'm not denying we shot ourselves in the foot with the keeper error but that to me is not the same as a 'break of the rules' wrong decision. And yes this whole convo is assuming the ref was wrong but it seems he prob was as the rule states the ball needed to have been kicked...

If you get a chance to see the Football League show that follows MOtD two things are clear:

i) The ref holds his arm up to stop Rochdale taking the free kick whilst he goes to sort out the problem in the box, then wrongly awards a penalty. But in the book it's two all,and that's what counts.

ii) Claridge is a *ickhead.

Look, the referee hasn't cost us two points.

We had ninety minutes to secure the win and we failed to do so (let's be honest, their keeper wasn't exactly overstretched, was he). I suspect the referee may have made an error, or maybe he didn't, but either way, it's not a game-costing one. We had plenty of time to fix things, even with ten men, but we didn't.

I am honestly more gutted that after working their guts off with ten men, a far worse mistake has chucked it away.

I haven't read through all the threads on this subject so this may well be 'fixtures' but I just did a little research for myself and came up with the following from the FIFA rules of the game 2010/2011:

Law 13 – free kicks: the ball is in play when it is kicked and moves.

Law 14 – the penalty kick: A penalty kick is awarded against the team that commits one of the ten offences for which a direct free kick is awarded (strikes an opponent etc), inside its own penalty area and while the ball is in play.

Definitely no penalty.

The Argus appears to have concluded firmly that the referee was wrong, judging by their report today.
