He one of the more informed pundits on the box and knows the lower leagues like the back of his hand. I know who I'd rather have rather than a patronising "ex-premiership player thinking what the hell am I doing sitting on this pile of scaffolding in the rain" you get when the terrestrial channels cover the early rounds of the cup.

He's still wrong though, if he doesn't know the rules then he shouldn't be making assertions that he does. How difficult would it have been for one of the BBC researchers to have a quick look on the fifa website like those on here have done and find what the rules actually are?

Thats also my recollection - he didn't blow for the free kick to be taken, he blew when he started running over to sort out the fracas with Greer and THEN the ball was played. Hence the ball was most definitely still dead BEFORE the whistle was blown, and BEFORE the Greer incident that earned the red card occurred.

Look at the video again when Claridge is explaining (wrongly).
You will be put right.

Im sorry lads but this is just a common sense situation from how i look at it. Your guy has just completley cleaned Eldo out, it shouldn't matter wether the balls in play/active whatever you cant go about lamping people and not get punished for it so realisticly for what he did a penalty was the only possible decision! To be fair i would be pretty pissed if this happened to us but reading this topic you are taking your frustration out on the wrong person, it shouldn't be the referee (even though it was the linesman who flagged) your slating its your lad that did it! Anyway time to move onto next week, good luck for the rest of the season!

No one has said he didnt deserve the red card. He was an arsehole for puching/pushing your player in the face regardless of what Elding did. The whole point is a penalty was the wrong decision going by the rules of the game, End of.

You are joking aren't you? It's bad enough there are rules to the game that refs don't follow. In your scenario it's just a case of making it up as you go along!!!

To put it nicely, plain stupid logic.

What are the laws for?

It is utter shit when you want to rewrite the laws yourself.

Hardly utter shit is it mate it is just common sense, get over it

No reading the rule book and following it is common sense. You dont just make your own rules up. Going by your logic there would be no point in having rules and each ref could deal with situations however he deems to be correct.

If the play is 'active' (it's a bollox term... never heard of it and I reffed for 10 years to County standard!).

Say Jones was about to take the penalty,Murray has wandered up to their keeper in their box and called him a nasty word and just as the ref blows the whistle the keeper decks Murray.... is their penalty scrapped and then we get one??

If Greer doesnt hit him it wouldnt have been a correct or incorrect pen.

That's no the point here Kinks - we all know that. If the laws haven't been carrie dout correctly then it's wrong and cost us 2 points

How has it cost us two points? We went 2-1 up afterwards?

2 - 1 = 1

How the hell you can sit there and say (assuming it was the wrong decision) it hasn't cost us points is sheer stupidity. You are deliberately TRYING to be awkward / different (as usual)

If there was no pen there was no goal to them and we'd hopefully have therefore gone 2-0 up. I know goals change games but without that pen against us we'd surely have won.

Not at all.

You can't go on if's and but's and the fact is we were winning with 2 mins left when WE cocked up.

It's not ifs and buts tho. If it was the wrong decision and no pen it's still 1-0 to us. I'd say 75% chance we'd win / 20% a draw / 5% a Rochdale win IMO. You do seem to pick on a lot of fairly logical posts to disagree. This is far different from a ref sending someone off dubiously or awarding a dubious pen it is a black and white rule so it's not really ifs and buts
