Is it time we did something about FRANCE?

The thing that pisses me off more than anything about the French is I can't find anything in France which is remotely inferior to anything we have here.

That really does grind my gears.

Well, they don't have a writer called Stephen Clarke who published a fantastic book called "1,000 Years of Annoying the French".

Actually I've heard this too. I believe that the changing global climate has meant that southern England is now more conducive to producing fine sparkling white wine that France's Champagne region. We also consume a great deal more of it than the French, surprisingly

It's not that surprising when you remember that the original market for Champagne was purely British originally. They only started making it from inferior wine (with additional sugar added) due to our demand.

Having tried the Nyetimber sparkling, it is indeed very very good. e77 is a regular purchaser of their product.

France is the only other country that shares America's ability to offer EVERY type of holiday to an extremely high standard. City breaks, beach holidays, skiing trips, beautiful countryside retreats - there is nothing those guys can't provide. To be honest, I see the UK as more of a backward nation every day. France is only 50 miles away, but it might as well be on another planet. The answer is simply to move there. Don't try and fight a losing battle.
For once we agree :)

I think I could rather happily live in Marseille.

Struggling to think of ANY real negatives of a life on the Côte d'Azur

Agree, but you can keep Marseilles. And Aix-en-Provence. Bandits.

Finally found a stick to beat the Frenchw ith.

We have significantly higher oil reserves here in the UK

HA! Take that France!

In fact, even tiny ALBANIA has more oil to call upon than France.

Argentina. Chile.

I agree. I think it's my favourite country, I've been there five times in the last year and had a completely different trip each time. I've been snowboarding in the Alps, had a beach holiday in Annecy, hiking in the mountains and a historical trip to Normandy. Once I feel confident enough in my French language skills I will be moving out there.

I have holidayed in France every year for a decade now, and twice in each of the last 2 years. Lovely place, lovely people. Very little to dislike.

Lucky you went to France eh? Otherwise you might have ended up holidaying in Skegness every year. Broaden your horizons. Thanks.

Personally I'd add Australia to that very short list ( obviously it's somewhat further away ! ).

And I will instantly cross it off that list. Three nice cities, some nice beaches, the great barrier reef (absolutely amazing, admittedly) some second rate mountains and a big rock, all in a country the size of Western Europe. The most over-rated country on the planet. With the most irritating people. Crap.

New Zealand definitely does.

Almost. The cities aren't up to much. Better than Australia though, especially when you consider that it is about a twentieth the size.

Oh, and London is better than Paris in pretty much every single department, except perhaps restaurants. And it's not like it's short of decent restaurants.

And just to contradict my deliberately argumentative (Friday lunchtime pints) post, France is a fantastic country. Love it. Shame it's full of French though, if only they'd have populated England and we'd have populated France. It would have worked so much better.

I would love to go go Australia, New Zealand, Argentina etc but they are completely out of my price range at the moment!

Maybe if you didn't go on holiday five times a year then you might have a bit more money

The French own less property than we do, rents are capped and they still have industry and the French tend to buy French products these are some of the reasons

With 2 young kids the furthest we can go currently (driving) is France or Spain. I love Spain, so we may try that one next year.
