Is it time we did something about FRANCE?

Yes, but other than the beaches, city breaks, skiing, the fine cuisine, the amazing architecture, the Tour de France, their fast trains, philosophy, the wine, champagne, their cheese, art, the originators of modern medicine, scientific enlightenment, metric system, metro (first underground...), what have the French ever done for us!?

Vanessa Paradis.

France is the only other country that shares America's ability to offer EVERY type of holiday to an extremely high standard. City breaks, beach holidays, skiing trips, beautiful countryside retreats - there is nothing those guys can't provide. To be honest, I see the UK as more of a backward nation every day. France is only 50 miles away, but it might as well be on another planet. The answer is simply to move there. Don't try and fight a losing battle.

Personally I'd add Australia to that very short list ( obviously it's somewhat further away ! ).

One major difference. They do not have an Aristocracy or such a defined class system. We allow the rich to feather their nests at the expense of the masses.

Off with their heads I say!
Very true. Bizarrely, there are people in this country who see our aristocracy as some sort of asset, and not the unqualified spongers that they are. It's very odd.

The thing that pisses me off more than anything about the French is I can't find anything in France which is remotely inferior to anything we have here.

That really does grind my gears.

Having been to france a lot in recent years due to family living there, and also visiting parts of Germany, i have yet to find anything inferior to anything we have here in either of these countries.

I think we can beat them in music. Cast your mind back over the many groundbreaking legendary musical acts we have given the world. The French can boast Daft Punk but not an awful lot else

Now you're talking nonsense. Paris is the best city in the world in my opinion.

I think you and I have had this very argument before.

I'm afraid my experience (although admittedly only very limited) of Paris was overwhelmingly negative. It was as dirty as Belgrade but far more expensive and unfriendly.

Luckily, I've met many a Frenchman who've subsequently confirmed my feelings towards Paris are actually fairly common among their own too. Paris is not representative of France as a whole, generally speaking

I've never been to Australia so I say this with no confidence at all, but I just can't imagine it ticks the skiing or countryside boxes. Unless 2,000 miles of dust counts as countryside.

New Zealand definitely does.

Maybe you should have stopped after the highlighted bit !!!!! There's a far bigger variety of countryside in Australia than France and the ski-ing is fantastic. That said I love France as well.
