Right wing politics have not had much of a look in over the past 13 years, even when Labour was at a low with the Iraq war the Tories could not achieve a win. And now the public seems to be pushing them even further into the political hinter land.

From looking at the opinion polls there seems to be a hell of a lot more people wanting to vote for centre left parties. And I'm guessing in a few more years even more of the traditonal Tory vote will have literally died off.

Is this the beginning of the end for them?

no , of course not, you could have said exactly the same about labour during the tories 18 years in power, and the demise of the 'traditional working class industrial' labour vote.

He's right. These things are cyclical. I do think Cameron has thrown this away... Labour have been awful, but Cameron doesn't seem to have offered anything as an alternative. This is what's led to the Lib Dems jump... the Tories & Labour are just doing an appalling job in government & opposition

pretty much sums it up, i am also coming to the conclusion that whoever wins this is inheriting a real poisoned chalice, people just do not realise how much shit we are in , and the cuts that have simply got to be made, you're lucky that the aussie banks largely avoided the sub prime crisis.

True, but I am confident that Brown and Clegg will keep the good ship stable whilst in choppy seas.

They had the poll of polls on breakfast Tv today, which showed that even 28% of the vote against the Tories 32% and Lib Dems 31%, Labour still would end up the biggest party in parliament!

Is our electoral system outdated?

No, it's just completely unfair. Unless you live in one of the 150 or so marginals, your vote counts for jack shit - and even then, you're better off voting tactically as opposed to what you believe, in many cases

You only have to see how much the Sun newspaper is hysterically targetting the Lib Dems now to see what a threat they are. This whole thing is cyclical and always happens when a long government is dying and the opposition is struggling to properly reinvent itself. See 1992.

Seems perfectly fine to me :)

There will always be room for right wing politics, but *if* a LibLab pct is formed this time round, and electoral reform follows, I can see them being marginalised just as socialism was marginalised in the early 90s.

In my opinion, the only route back for right wing ideology would be when/if the electorate becomes tired of centralist government that never affects any change and problems commonly identified by right wingers (immigration, the cost of a bloated public sector) are also identified by the electorate as major issues and are not properly addressed.

The right will never die.

Unfortunately racism and bigotry will always be present.
Yawn , change the 'worthy' the record for f*** sake.As long as certain sections of the indigenous population see immigarants being treated preferentially there will be resentment, and as long as that situation remains there will be prats like you with their head in the sand , who live in leafy , virtually mono cultural sussex, or severnside who bleat on about racism and bigotry from a safe distance.

Possibly. I've not witnessed a three way split before. To me this seems like new and uncharted territory. Is there a genuine cycle of power? A couple of repeats in a life time does not necessaily constitute a cycle. And going back beyond my generation I'm not sure you can make a like-for-like comparison.

ok, so when people say 'on the right' or 'on the left' what are they talking about?

The extreme left would be Communism and the extreme right, Fascism ,Hitler,BNP etc. These are the extremes of all the positions in between.
Labour should be slightly to the Left with Conservatives on the right of centre.
