Is failure to win Saturday the end for Steve McClaren?...

And replace with Who?

The FA fecked up, now anyone decent will cost an arm and a leg.

Could bring back Sven to save us again.

For the neutral, that would be pissingly funny - the final admission that actually, he wasn't THAT bad. Would it finally - finally - finish off the "golden generation" myth?

I wish it was, but it won't be. He's on a ridiculously long contract, and there aren't the candidates out of work like there were in the summer. I lay the blame firmly with the media for their hounding of Sven and demands that an English coach be put in place.

Oh leave it out! £4m a year, shagging high-profile TV presenters and blowing the best chance we've had for decades to win a World Cup - what did he expect.

Sure, there were one or two Fleet Street xenophobes out for him but they crop up everywhere in life. Just take a look at this board.

And he is still considering a return to English club football. So if the treatment was so unfair, why would he subject himself to that?

I concur.

Sadly not, still makes Sven very competent

There was definitely an agenda to get an Englishman into the job - how can you deny that?! He was portrayed as passion-less Sven, that he didn't care because he wasn't English and didn't have the fire. Then they wanted Stuart Pearce to be given the job!

I'm not saying that Sven shouldn't have left, I think the timing was right. But why then the pursuit of only one highly qualified foreign coach (Scolari) and a load of English dross (Allardyce, Pearce, Curbishley and McClaren)?

We should have bust the bank and got Capello - there is no suitable English candidate at present and the bad news is there won't be one for some time.

That doesn't mean he was anything amazing though. He was competent enough to steer us through this type of group, but not much else.

And - I ask purely as an interested by-stander who finds the whole England coach thing highly tragicomic - the evidence to suggest that anyone else might have done better is what exactly? Does the legend of the "golden generation" still have legs?
