Insider getting cross?

1) I don't think it's ridiculous given the history of the club and the fact that when they joined they said they were going to be an open board.

If you get into a relationship with someone who was stung by a betrayal, and you promised you'd be open with them, then suddenly you start being all evasive don't you think she would start to worry?

2) I'm not criticising them for not being open. I'm saying insider's tetchiness at being asked to clarify a long winded, non-answer reply to a straight forward yes/no question isn't really justified.

I'm also saying fans shouldn't be criticised for asking questions of the board (within reason, and that a major step in the stadium building is within reason)

I think you're fighting a losing battle here, but for what its worth, I'm with you.

Its getting a little bit 'Animal Farm' around here, with some of the long-timer, high profile posters being the most supportive of the 'let them get on with it, the board know what they're doing and don't need to tell us' arguments

Isn't that a little '1984' with the Thought Police needing to know your every move ?

HILARIOUS thread. We're not told (directly) if the steel has been ordered and suddenly it's a sign of an evasive, deceiving board. And if anyone questions that view their behaviour is likened to anyone who appeased Bellotti/Archer.

Seriously people, listen to yourselves. Who actually gives a chuff if the steel has been ordered?

I still believe we have an open and communicative board and club. I wonder how many fans have an equivalent of 'Ask The Club' on their playground message boards...? Just wondering, like.

I am more than happy for the club to just be allowed to get on with the project, but tempered with a view to keeping us informed when things crop up, or telling us when we arrive at a new stage in the development, or for them to supply semi-regular updates in blog form, for instance, or for us to have access to them in order to answer sensible questions should the need arise.

Funnily enough, I think we have that, don't we?

I totally agree with what the Insider is saying here. At the end of the day the main contract has been placed with the Buckingham Group and it is up them and them alone to decide when steel orders are placed. As I understand it the contract is a Design and Build Contract whereby the Contractor takes the risk on the completing the project on time and on budget. If there are no Client variations that extend the contract period, and there are no claims for the Specified Perils under the contract, and the Contractor is late then he is hit with Liquidated and Ascertained Damages (a daily financial "penalty" for each day late) which I would expect would be quite signifcant on a project of this size. These L&ADs will already have been agreed and are contained within the contract.

You can ask these questions as to whether or not orders have been placed and I appreciate there are lead in periods for materials and plant etc, but you also have to accept we are in a global recession, material prices are dropping (including steel prices) and the contractor is within his right to negotiate to get the best value for each of his sub-contract packages. As such they may not want to give out information to when they are placing orders.

I have no inside track on whether or not orders have been placed and i don't really care to be honest as the club are paying a Contractor to deliver the project on time and are using a contract (that I believe that to be D&B) that transfers these risks to them; but I am a quantity surveyor so have a bit of experience on these matters. I do accept however that we all want this built asap and it may look like nothing is being done but there is a lot of work that goes on in procuring the packages so that when works do commence the project can run as smoothly as possible - and don't forget the biggest claim and counter-claim on the new Wembley stadium was on the steelwork package for changes in the design after the package had been procured...

f*** me, what a wanky thread

But they are commercial decisions that the club has to take and tha they are entitled not to divulge if they see fit. That information does not have be put into the public domain - it is a commercial decision between the contractor and the vendor.

Would you tell the whole world how much you paid for your house, just because they asked? I suspect not!

Well, if you ask a question like "has the steel been ordered?" and the answer you get is "we entered into a contract with buckingham group, they're very good at what they do and are currently on track" your question isn't being answered, is it?

Yes it is being answered. You just don't like it, but it is still an answer.

It is keeping people awake at night in Central Borneo.

:) Not much else to do round here.

I don't care, and FWIW, I trust the board. But if the club said they were going to order the steel by a certain date, then someone asks at that date if they had, and then gets this ridiculously evasive answer from the club, its fair enough to point it out, and faintly stupid of everyone else to jump on them for it.

If I was Insider I'd stop offering the Ask the Club service (and it is a service, he isn't obliged) until people get a bit more discriminating.

A lot of the questions are more suited to idle speculation on here than any 'serious' response.

But it is a bit weird that if you asked questions in 1996 you were a hero, and if you ask them now you are a traitor. The board is very different, happily, but there are some scars and it is understandable people are a bit edgy.

Was I the only person who read the article last week that at last the board had come clean regarding the final cash for Falmer?, it appears hopes were on a shared use of the stadium by Univercity/College with the Council making a large payment. This is not now going to happen due to the credit crunch, which is good news for Council Tax payers.
Should we now be talking of Falmer in the past tense?

If you read Martin Perry's stadium diary as posted yesterday you will see that your interpretation is incorrect

I very much doubt if Insider has access to every single aspect of the building process. The project is in the hands of The Buckingham Group, and according to them, everything is on track. Thats what the Insder has passed on, and that, frankly, is all we need to know. All this pestering on Ask The Club about whether or not steel has been ordered is a load of hot air and scrambled bollocks.

The building is ON SCHEDULE. We've been told. Leave it at that for christs sake.

Spot on. Personally, MP/DK saying the stadium is on track is enough for me, and I don't feel the need to check up on individual jobs. However, I can understand the interest from supporters and the need to be kept up to date (the blog, programme, podcast regularly do this - often it is just a case of MP saying "We are still on track" - but this still doesn't satisfy the Falmer appetite of a few)... Therefore I have spent the last few days trying to actually confirm the steel had been ordered. I was pretty confident it had been, as MP told me in December he was about to pass the details of the commission. However, I was not able to actually speak with MP until today to confirm this, due to his enormous workload on Falmer. I did speak to someone else on the project team yesterday, who also felt it had been ordered, but wasn't 100% sure (but also not too concerned) and said it wasn't the club who is responsible, but the Buckingham Group. Now, having spoken to Martin, I can confirm that the steel has been ordered... and relax.

BTW - I'm not getting cross.
