Do you drink beer? In some societies, that would be frowned upon, and the peer pressure/socialisation factor would probably lead you to not drink. In the UK, drinking beer is de rigeur for Britons. And so we (nearly all) do it.

Is that what one might call 'beer pressure'?

agree with all those sentiments lord b and brovian, however, depressingly it's not just a british obsession at the moment and a lot of the wealthier european countries are adopting this intolerant stance.

In terms of Moslem women not speaking English, well that an endictment againgst our education system, plus, we need to accept that a large proportion of migrants are from very poor countries, who are often poorly or not educated, Moslem women can also suffer from large levels of sexism. Our society needs to developing plans for full language education to ensure that everyone can participate. Including educating GB people to learn more than one language.

If our Immigration system is overloaded, well we better allocate more cash to it to resolve the problem, not blame the people who are leaving areas of war, intollerance, injustice etc.

In terms of Aussies, I know a few who save all of their cash (cos of the great exchange rate) and plan to take it all back to Oz, they contribute bollocks to our economy, our stay their welcome, take all the jobs in central London, ensure that unemployment in London is the highest in the UK. But one of my best mates is an Aussie so I am not racist.

I live in Hackney, 50% of the population is black and other ethnic minorities, in equivalent terms greater than the population of Hove actually. If I want a meal I can choose any cuisine I want, the Turkish supermarket outdo's the Tesco's, Sainsbury's. Over the past year some of the local Kurds have been on a hunger strike, but didn't we go to Iraq to sort out their human rights.

Some of You need to chill, we are the seventh richest country in the world.

People always bring up this kind of thing when we talk about nationality. The French, Germans and Italians are also the product of 1000s of years of invasion. You only have to look at Lombardy (formed by the invading Lombards) or Burgundy (named after the invading Burgundians) to see this.

If there is no English nationality, then there is also no French, Germany, Italian or Polish nationality. Everyone in Europe is a right mixture.

(And yes, I do get the point about the pre-5th century. I am from Sussex after all, and enjoy my part-Saxon roots.)

As far as I am aware this was true in the 80s and early 90s, but is no longer the case. The government predictions for population in these islands expect us to have over 61 million people in a few years.

This road where I live in Huddersfield is 50/50 Asian/English and the Moslem women whilst not holding long conversations about football with can certainly speak good English.

50 years ago I would have agreed with you but classes were started for the ladies to learn English at the time to help them with doctors etc.

The vast majority of Asians around here have a distinct advantage when it comes to jobs because they can speak at least 4 or 5 languages fluently whereas people like myself only have Englsih and a smattering of French.

Spot on. But of course, it's all fairly invisible to the man on the street, because whereas your average immigrant doesn't have a pot to piss in and therefore needs the state to provide some sort of basic care, Lord & Lady Snot can shuffle and sifen millions off shore and nobody needs to know - nobody can physicallly point them out on the streets as costing the NHS billions in lost taxes because you don't know for sure what their financial arrangements are.

I'm not going to have a pop at Safeway as being a racist because at the end of the day, we all know how such extreme rants come about - it's frustration at perceived injustices. Assylum seekers *are* initially a burden on society, but obviously we as a wealthy country really ought to be able to cope with this, properly weed out the bogus claims, and ensure that queue jumping at the locals expense is eliminated.

Once final thought - why is it always assylum seekers and immigrants in general who are held up as taking the piss out of this country? Not only do the rich do the same, but what about the teenagers who live in council houses with 3 kids by 3 fathers - or fathers who run off and don't face up to their responsibilities. They all cost the country a fortune for the rest of us who earn a crust and pay our taxes.

Black Pudding From Scratch (English)

Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients
1 1/4 qt Fresh pig's blood
8 7/8 oz Bread cut into cubes
1 1/4 qt Skim milk
1 lb Cooked barley
1 lb Fresh beef suet
8 oz Fine oatmeal
1 ts Salt
2 ts Ground black pepper
2 ts Dried and crumbled mint

Instructions

1. Put the bread cubes to soak in the milk in a warm oven. Do not heat the milk beyond blood temperature! Have the blood ready in a large bowl, and pour the warm milk and bread into it. Stir in the cooked barley. Grate the beef suet into the mixture and stir it up with the oatmeal. Season with the salt, pepper and mint.

2. Have ready 2 or three large roasting pans. Divide the mixture between them - they should not be more than 3/4 full. Bake in a moderate oven -- 350 F - for about an hour or until the pudding is well cooked through. This makes a beautifully light pudding which will keep well in a cold larder.

3. Cut into squared and fry till heated through and the outside is crisp, in bacon fat or butter. Delicious for breakfast, or for supper with fried apples and mashed potato.
