bit of a generalisation there FG - I'd like to think I'm a little different - I pay my own way, don't use the health service (well haven't done yet in 4 years), pay my taxes - never send any of my money out of the country to my birthland, yet since I'm a Australian I'm a johnny foreigner who is contributing to the demise of your ideal society??

unless I've misunderstood you??

Not difficult given his atrocious typing, Tedebear. Hard to believe he'd actually edited that effort - his English is worse than many of the so-called 'Johnny Foreigners' he's having a go at.

what crap bhaexpress

you know nothing!

substantiate the claim that Muslim men in this country prevent their women learning the English language. You're living in a world of stereotypes.

the equivalent is Muslim women thinking that all their counterparts husbands were drunking, rapist, paedophiles who beat their wives up after too many bottles of Newcastle brown ale.

You clearly are the misguided one. Try shopping in somewhere like Hounslow then you'll see what I mean. Also, while we're at it, where do you stand on arranged marriages ? I've worked in several areas where there is a large asian population and can tell you the the idea that these marriages work is far too often, tragically wrong.

Slightly different although true just the same. Once again though, they were not forced or compelled to enter into these marriages.

Not heard of peer pressure, then?

It is sometimes difficult to forget just how powerful social norms can be. Amongst some Asian communities, arranged marriages are the social norms, and sometimes work but sometimes don't. Amongst, selection of marriage partner, and indeed the whole pressure to do it in the first place, is the social norm, and sometimes works but sometimes doesn't.

Yes but there's been more than a few cases of Asian women being sent 'home' to the Indian sub continent against their will. Sorry Peer pressure is for the weak and stupid, something you just can't legislate for.

Blimey, this is a bit heavy for a Tuesday afternoon!!!

Migration has been traditional in this country for centuries, whether it be Romans, Angles and Saxons (Germans to you and me), those Nordic types with big beards, the French, Asians, Orientals, or Australian barmen and barmaids. They all add to the heady mix of culture that is Great Britain. Is it any wonder that our favourite food is curry? Or that we say deja vu? No, it's because we are a bastard race, and always have been. If people want to come to this country as a career choice and have something to contribute, let them. If they need to come here because their homeland is no longer safe, we welcome them in because it is what we British do.

Cup of tea anyone?

Peer Pressure is for everyone. Or, rather, socialisation affects everyone. You may not like it, but there you go.

Do you drink beer? In some societies, that would be frowned upon, and the peer pressure/socialisation factor would probably lead you to not drink. In the UK, drinking beer is de rigeur for Britons. And so we (nearly all) do it.

ahhhh I wondered where I had gone wrong when they turned me down! I shall try and report back

The young Miss Bracknell is currently swanning around south-east Asia en route to Oz and NZ.

A great thing to be doing.

My fear is that English intolerance will eventually be noticed by the rest of the world and we will be denied the opportunities that we currently take for granted.

And we'll all be worse off as a result.

By and large I support what fatbadger's been saying. After the second world war the influx of immigrants from the Commonwealth saved this country from becoming an insignificant cultural backwater with a stagnating economy. We owe them far more than they owe us. And as has been said that was only the latest of a series of waves of immigrants.

However just because certain people 'will always abuse the system' doesn't mean it shouldn't be tightened up. More curry houses are a good thing, more East European Vice barons aren't.

At the end of the day though I'd rather let a few bad apples slip in than try to implement a 'fortress Britain' policy. Keep Britain Colourful!
