And on another point, Tyler Clippard looks more like a supply teacher than an athlete. But he sure knows how to pitch.
Pitchers are a strange breed. Randy Johnson was the greatest pitcher I ever saw and he looked like a straggly haired hillbilly rather than a guy on an annual contract worth tens of mill!

Spot on, Simster. I think there must be some pledge to have a shocking haircut or unlikely facial hair which must be signed before you can pitch in the MLB.

I'm beginning to worry baseball might not be for you.

With the Nationals taking it to game five with a walk off home run, with the Giants coming back from two games down to win in Cincinnati by surviving a two on two out 9th inning rally, the Orioles also taking it to game five by winning in New York in the 13th and the Tigers winning their game five in Oakland, I can't quite remember such an exciting post season. All the divisional series have gone to game five, the shit or bust game and amongst the contenders are two sides who haven't even been to post season for years in Baltimore's case or ever in Washington.

I've seen some dull baseball games (and Albion games) but none of the post season has fallen into this category.

Go Cards!
Fair enough.

I have only been watching the Nat's WIN
Maybe I'm just not that 'lucky' in picking the games.
Obviously I can see the excitement in how the game ended, last night.
But that was 3 hours after kick off.

I'll think about it some more while out on delivery.

I won't be able to watch the decider, although I might be up early enough to catch the end, if it goes on a bit, so that should be thrilling from the off!

Oh and as a reluctant shaver, myself.
The facial hair has been far and away the best bit.

Relievers especially favour handlebar moustaches - John Axford of the Brewers and Todd Jones who used to close for Detroit and Florida.

The San Francisco Giants have made a great effort in this respect; check out pictures of the closer Brian Wilson (currently on the disabled list) and Sergio Romo.

I have been giving some more thought to MY newbie issues with baseball.

As said I'll keep going, if the Nat's win tonight.
I'll try and take on board the advise and tips.
I certainly don't want to sound like a Whining Wendy putting the sport down, so this will be my last 'unsure newbie' post.

Having thought about it today 80-90% of the plays in the field have very little or no jeopardy attached to them, with very little sense of urgency.

Most catches are taken, and most run outs completed.
A 'simple' catch of a rocket line drive, or a jog and gentle underarm toss to the base fielder.
The 3rd base man pulled off what should have been stunning catches of a near unseeable ball, with no reaction.
It's all a bit too pedestrian with sudden moments of great high drama.

I guess I need to be able to 'ramp up' my spectating to allow me to really feel those moments.

They are mental.

Is there a reasoning behind it, or is it just 'hillbilly chic'

Last summer we went to see the Padres at the Giants and encountered the phenomena that is Brian Wilson's beard, and the whole "Fear The Beard" thing.

Brilliant !

Check this out FRANCISCO GIANTS BEARD - Google Search to see not only pictures of The Beard, but also tee-shirts, aeroplanes and even CHILDREN with tribute beards !

I started watching the 9th, I doubt with that double I'll get to the end grr.

Judging by the commentary this is the kind of game I was expecting to be watching.

UN-BE f***ing-LIEVEABLE

Wow what a game. The number of times I have seen the cardinals blow it in the 9th, I had a feeling we could drag it back, but I cannot believe Motte's performance in the bottom 9th. Three strike outs !! Whata guy.

So San Francisco here we come!

Stat brother I am sorry coz that is a desparate collapse and you will be gutted. But you wanted drama, and that was a helluva ballgame.

WASHINGTON -- They were down to their final out, their final strike five separate times. Yet the same team that wouldn't go away last October refused to again.

The Cardinals stunned the Nationals with a four-run ninth inning to cap a comeback that was as improbable as the one this team had in an elimination game against the Rangers last October. Digging themselves out of an early six-run hole, the Cardinals depart Nationals Park with a 9-7 victory in what was a win-or-go home National League Division Series Game 5 on Friday night.

St. Louis entered the ninth down by two, having already scratched away a deficit that seemed daunting against 21-game winner Gio Gonzalez. Carlos Beltran led off the frame with a double, his third hit of the night. Nats closer Drew Storen rebounded to retire two, however, lifting a sellout crowd to its feet.

But Yadier Molina  and David Freese  both down to their final strikes -- drew walks to extend the frame. That brought up Daniel Descalso with the bases full, and the second baseman -- in the lineup for his defense -- sent a shot up the middle off the glove of a diving Ian Desmond.
Two runs scored to tie the game. :clap2:

Then it was Pete Kozma -- the same middle infielder, who just two months ago seemed to have no future in the organization -- dropping a single into right field to give the Cardinals a two-run lead.

Jason Motte, who had pitched the eighth, returned to the mound to close the game and earn the Cards a ticket in the NL Championship Series. :rave:

They'll travel to San Francisco for a meeting between the two most recent World Series champs.

I stayed to the end, and went to work late.

I think I could have pitched out the Nat's, they were a broken team.

As I said it definitely seemed like the kind of game I was expecting.
Even TK said after the 4th, it has been the lesser of the four series.

I guess they more than made up for it, in the one I couldn't watch!

Okay Barry, that was incredible by the Redbirds. SF fan here, and I think the NLCS is going to be nail-bitingly good. Let's go GI-ANTS !!! :clap2:

Considering all the passion for baseball being shown here, it's disappointing that I got so few replies in March to my suggestion for a NSC fantasy league - which, as anyone who has played seriously knows, takes following the game to another level entirely. If people PM me now with email addresses I can set it up for 2013.
