I've been listening to the baseball on 5LSX.....I haven't a clue what's going on, but it does help me to sleep.

Absolutely no let up in the drama last night at Yankees Stadium

Bronx Bomers 0-4 down in the bottom of the ninth, Ichiro homers to score two, and with two outs Ibanez repeats the feat to level it 4-4 !!

To the 12th , the Tigers take the lead and Yanks skipper and all round super hero Derek Jeter breaks his ankle and is out for the year!

Tigers go on to win 6-4 in 12.

Oh how I wish I was in San Francisco tonight.......... LET'S GO CARDINALS

The Yankees are used to it. 2004 ALCS comes to mind -- the greatest single choke in baseball history.

Nice to see that after all the money Steinbrenner spunked on the Yankees they're not actually doing that well at the minute

Ah, so that's what happened. I was listening on 5 Live Sports Extra and got the message that it was all very exciting but they were all shouting at the top of their voices (commentators and the crowd) and I hadn't quite grasped the nuances of what went on. Although it was plainly all very exciting.

Bit like being 2-0 down going into injury time at the end of the second half and winning it 3-2

What's happened to the Yankees bats? It would be incredible (but not what I want!) if they came back from 2-0 down with Verlander to come in Games 3 and 7 and Jeter out of the series.

At the moment the Yankees couldn’t hit a barn door with a banjo.

Some more embarrassing facts for Yankees fans

Highest team payroll this year – Yankees ($210M)

Highest paid baseball player – A Rod ($29M)

If A Rod is being paid so much, should he not be batting at number 1? From what I remember, Jeter, Suzuki and Cano have opened the batting.

Or has he just been a bit pants this season?

All you need to know about A Rod:-

In December 2007, Rodriguez and the Yankees agreed to a 10-year, $275 million contract. This contract was the richest contract in baseball history (breaking his previous record of $252 million)

That's right over $500,000,000 in contracts.

But if they are paying him so much, should he not be their best player batting at number 1? It's like paying Lua Lua £100,000 a week just to be a squad player rather than being number 1 pick every game.

Don't ask me I'm new to this.

But matey boy steps up and only hits it a little way, first base.
Chummy nos 2 steps up and does the same. Now first and second are covered.
Mr Big Bucks saunters over hits a homer and you've got 3 runs.

Blokes 1 & 2 are out, Mr BB is still there swinging.

Think of the commission on that deal. Highest earning agent (Scott Boras) received $12.4M in commission this year. And we complain about soccer agents in the UK.

I also like the stats giving cost per win:

Yankees @ $2.2M (only just below the Red Sox @ $2.3M) compared to the Oakland A’s @ $0.63M. Something really out of whack there.

Yes, this is getting at it. You want your lead-off hitters to be good at getting on base (hitting or walking), but they also need some speed for stealing bases and getting around the diamond. Ideally you have someone on base when your best hitters (average and power) come up; usually the third and fourth in the lineup. These are the players like Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, ARod ,Pujols and BUSTER POSEY:bowdown: Come on Giants, tie it up tonight.

Watched a nationals game when I visited DC a few years back, Loved the stadium, Within the city, massive multi story car park, tube station near by, kids stuff for any little ones. Beer in your seats, Classic americanisms everywhere, Nice club shop and pay on the day.

I thought when I was there I'd love to live in DC, A great city, and sport around every corner I found myself in this sports bar type thing I think it was ESPN or fox and had multiple floors, Beer and steak everywhere, everytable has personal tv so you can watch what you like and arcade downstairs for kids.

Funny you should say that.
I seem to be droning on about The Tony Kornheiser radio show podcast on every Americana thread.
It's from DC and very easily side tracks from sports to local issues.

So now for no discernible reason I know all about DC local politics, where to get bagels, the road works around Bethesda, the best cinema, and recently closed down gentlemen outfitters.
I love the podcast and feel like a DC native even though I have only past through without stopping.

See ya Yankees. Now 3 zip down against the Tigers in the ALCS. No 9th innings magic from the Bronx Bombers. Verlander with 132 pitches, his 3rd straight game with over 120 pitches. A classy Phil Coke closed the door.

4th, and hopefully final game tomorrow in Detroit.

First the England / Poland game is cancelled due to weather and now the 4th game between the Yankees and the Tigers. Looking at the TV coverage it seems a strange decision.

The three and ahalf hour rain delay couldn't help the Giants.
