I disagree with people who say we would hate them with a passion if they'd been sent us down. We went into that game, knowing full well what was at stake.

One of us had to go down, them or us. We were hardly going to throw in the towel and roll over (although at half time, I really thought we were doing exactly that).

Granted, I'd have been devastated had we been relegated to the conference, but it wouldn't have been Hereford's fault, it would've been our own - and that of Archer and Bellotti. Their relegation was their own fault. They shouldn't have dragged themselves into the relegation mire.

Hereford have battled back, and fair play to them. But their 'hatred' of us is simply sour grapes.

Hereford have some of the most venomous fans I know. I remember when they were first promoted back to the Football League, they were making hateful comments about one day playing us. Well, that has happened sooner than they expected. They are arguably more passionate about us than the average Crystal Palace supporter.

Agreed. Had we lost that day and gone down, I don't honestly believe I would have any hatred for Hereford. The fact they went down was due to a run of shite which, fortunately for us, coincided with our excellent run and we caught them up. Simple as. How their fans can hold us responsible for their relegation is beyond me.

The hatred that Hereford fans display towards the Albion seems to very much mirror that with which many Scots hate the English.

When you scratch beneath the surface, t's not the majority of the Albion fans/English that are the issue, it is "the media" for having their darlings and focusing upon them. For the other party, sitting outside the limelight, this creates a deep-seated resentment which morphs into a supposed hate for the opposing faction. Even though that opposing faction have, by and large, done nothing to inspire such hatred.

I don't hate

Brighton, I've always felt that we lost it the week before at Orient. What many Hereford fans feel is that you lot were the media darlings and as some of your posts in this thread suggest your fans were/are very arrogant. WTF has number of fans we have got to do with who deserved to go down??? We deserved to go down because our goal difference was worse then yours. Yeah is been 11 years and maybe you would rise above it but 9 years in the conference was hard to take. We were 24 hours away from going bust more than once during that time but we have come back and we have come back stronger off the field now. Anyway good luck for the rest of the season after tomorrow 2 - 1 Hereford

Actually mate, your GD was BETTER than ours. That year there was a one-off change in the rules, that said Goals For counted before Goal Difference. We scored ONE more goal.

Lets hope we buck the trend and score one more than you tomorrow! Just been to Ladbrooks in Kemp town and stuck a 10er on a United win which raised a few eye brows. I think GT will have our players fired up, having said that if you guys score first we won't have the belief that we can come back.

I live near Hereford (20 miles). I often wear my Brighton shirts around there and have never felt threatened or been abused for doing so. There isn't a rivalry as far as I can see, but I suppose it adds to the day to invent some sort of quasi bitterness against a shit team none of whose players we've ever heard of.

Where have people said Hereford deserved to go down due to the number of fans they have? The only references to number of fans is how many you're bringing tomorrow which shows that presumably this match doesn't REALLY mean a massive amount to you.

I suspect "hate" is not quite the word.

If the situations were reversed, I dare say plenty of us wouldn't have much of a soft spot for Hereford, but I don't really believe I'd hate them, certainly not after 11 years. Likewise I'm sure their fans wouldn't mind beating us, but not as much as they'd like to beat....er....well whoever their traditional rivals are (I honestly have no idea).

Like the guy says, I suspect a lot of the resentment at the time came because of the campaign orchestrated by our fans to raise the profile of the situation with Archer & Bellotti. Because of that, there was a ton of media interest in the Albion. If Hereford had ended up playing, say, Mansfield, for the right to stay up, the media would barely have noticed the game, and consequently Hereford fans wouldn't have held much more than a passing grudge.

The fact that all the protests had been going on, not to mention the points deductions and the fact we clawed back an 11 point deficit to go from relegation certainties to potential Great Escape merchants, made it much more of a media story. Hereford, not surprisingly perhaps, felt a tad neglected at the sight of Sky presenters whooping on that Brighton had survived.

I don't particularly sympathise, may I add (why would I, as a Brighton fan), but I can understand where they're coming from.

Fare enough Bob my mistake although “Frankly Brighton is a better place than Hereford and deserves to have a decent football club more so than they do.” Is quite a strong statement, I concur with Brighton being great place to live but I don’t think that means the City deserves to have a decent club more the Hereford! Under 300 fans is pretty poor but it is two long trips in under a week, and to stand so far from the pitch with no shelter in October to watch a team that can’t score and hasn’t picked a point away from home may go some way to explained that lack of support. Anyway I’m looking forward to my first visit to Withdean shame it’s not the Goldstone though I really liked that ground.

Yep, before I read your response that was exactly what I thought. Anyway only my second game of the season tomorrow and I'm gonna arrive, at least, in an optimistic frame of mind.
