I just can't find the energy to get bothered about players leaving. In our position, at this level, we will have good players come and go, and we are probably in a better position to get equivalent or better replacements in all positions. We are not a one man club, and as good as any single player has been, none of our squad is irreplaceable, and Gus has shown he can bring in some good players, so until the transfer window closes early next season and we know who has been brought in and what our core team is, I'm not going to get worked up about losing anyone.

Fine but it looks like we are gonna start another season on the backfoot with a fair proportion of the side likely to be new. The phrase "wait until we gel" springs to mind as we start off with some narrow defeats.

According to my starting 11 above, we need about 2-3 new players.

Not exactly a mega overhaul.

I didn't assume Crofts would be part of the starting eleven. If we are being offered anything above 400k for Crofts we'd be insane not to take it, we can easily replace him for that money. Scratch that, get Prutton for free - AND have an extra 400k to go towards rebuilding.

For me:

Brez

New RB/Hoyte (can see him being much improved next season)
Elphick
El Abd
Painter

Bennett
Navarro/Arismendi
Prutton/Dicker
LuaLua

Murray
New ST

Not that far off at all, are we really?

I don't think we'd sell Bennett for less than 750k.

Brez

New Spanish flair full back
New huge Animal Polish Centre back
New Uragayan number 6 with a pretty hair do
Painter

japanese midfield player - Kendo nagasaki springs to mind
Arismendi
French Midfield General
Irish nippy winger

Murray
Huge Black Congolese striker

we will piss this division

Contracts are only their for compensation. Compensation if a player crocks himself and for clubs when a player is wanted by another club.

Its wages and level that keeps/attracts players. Norwich can afford better wages and are at Championship level now, so Crofts would be mad to turn them down. Unless we are paying silly wages and he would only be considered as back up at Norwich.

Saying no to Norwich, would only leave an unhappy player and what use are they. Poyet wants players 100% committed.

Thats the way it is. Colchester may lose Prutton to us in much the same way. Even Man City will lose out to players who want Champions league football and why they wont attract the Kakas just yet.

So, if Norwich pay the money that we ask for, then its goodbye crofts. Equally, we will have money to set aside for another player. So I dont see it as a backward step, just another revolving door that is football.

Granted Blooms made a massive investment to the club but all this talk of Crofts leaving has got me thinking.

We have aspirations to be a Championship side yet here we are contemplating losing our captain and player of the season. Theres been no statement from the manager saying hes going nowhere or a hands off warning which leads me to believe that these rumours are credible.

I thought we would be in a position to keep hold of players by now. Lets not forget Crofts is still in contract so its solely down to the manager and chairman whether we keep him or not.

I was hoping we'd keep all our current starting 11 and add to it with 3 or 4 additional signings. i think selling Crofts would be a big mistake and one we no longer need to make for a couple of hundred grand.

ALL players have their price.

If Norwich come in and offer decent money and Poyet thinks he can replace him then it's good business.

That's just the way it is.

Roughly that side had us at Top 6 form for the last few months of the season, so with more time to work together and play Gus's way, why not?

I can't be alone in thinking we were expecting to strengthen the existing squad and so far all I've seen since the season ended is weakening (Painter a side):

e.g.
Kuipers - would have sufficed as 1st or 2nd choice
Calderon - snatched by those dogs who live on the banks of the Solent
Forster - he scores goals at this level
Crofts - what a find he's been, hence pending departure to Norwich

Similarly.....
Dickson - back, needs a lifestyle change so it's a gamble but could still do a job
Hendrie - I don't think it's going to be an Indian summer down here; if we sign him, I don't see that as strengthening.

Add the return of Smith, Hawkins and old barn-door banjo man upfront and, like Hendrie, I thought we'd be doing everything to move these guys on ASAP e.g. squad's not stronger for their presence, just larger.

Hmmmm, what are Tony, Gus and Grand Theft Auto up to I wonder..... ??? Guess we have to trust them!!

Perhaps Crofts saw the transfer as a progression in his career, and Gus didn't want to stand in his way. At the moment Norwich are a better proposition than Brighton for a player. (hopefully not for much longer!)

Bet that doesnt happen too often at many clubs. Times are changing as we aim towards a new goal. Just have to get used to it and enjoy the ride!

Anything over 350k i would be delighted, there are so many quality free transfers available these days, spend the money on a quality striker i say

GUS knows exactly what he is doing.

Just far enough away from LDC
Having had conversations with a couple of agents in the last (including the one who gave the insight into the Hammond negotiations) one of the big selling points of a move to Brighton in the past has been that we will always allow players to move on if a good career enhancing deal for them comes along. It helps when selling the club to players dropping a division or joining from non league.

I think if we let Crofts go for a decent price - whilst it is a short term loss, it should continue to show us as a club who will support our players if good opportunities come along and therefore help with attracting his replacement.
