The subtle difference being that no one on here is in a position of responsibility over their peers except the mods who try and stop us from getting sued for libel or done for Internet abuse.

Sometimes posters put up comments that are so ludicrous that the only proper response is a good old Anglo Saxon riposte.

Some of the insults I've seen on here have been adopted by me into my own lexicon of put downs and abuse. In fact if it wasn't for the colourful and imaginative slagging off it wouldn't be worth reading half of the threads.

That's true of course, but the question I posed is whether they have the right to insult others when presumably in other areas of their lives they would not normally do it. With respect to you, it is a forum and there will be different opinions, but the ludicrous posts to which you refer are your opinion of their worth; they might have real validity and it is your post which is ludicrous. I think we could probably agree that " colourful and imaginative slagging off" might be acceptable - most folk, I think, would see a distinction with this and an unpleasant insult that invariably will not be true.

I can certainly see what you mean -we all probably baulk at times at saying something controversial to someone we know. I go dog walking with someone (a very pleasant person, I should add)who is on benefits, rightly or wrongly, because she chose to work abroad, this cutting their contributions and chooses not to work now. Her answer to all of society's ills is to raise taxes. As we meet each day, and she is so nice, I can't bring myself to say what I feel, nicely, and would relish an anonymous opportunity such as NSC provides. AS you say, there is an element of cowardice to it, and there is no excuse to be rude.

All feedback, negative or positive, is good, but a caveat to that is that there is a clear line between criticism and abuse from an anonymous individual sitting behind a keyboard. For the wonderful platform the internet is, that will always be one of its biggest drawbacks.

Seeing this in the article reminded me of my thread last week, appealing to the good folk on here to avoid finishing off their posts with mindless insults, which are unpleasant and unnecessary. Besides the mickey taking about me an oldie, I had some very insightful replies, which was reassuring, others that contributed next to nothing, and some who saw no wrong with insults. It is a forum and you expect a range of opinions -that is fine. A couple of days later, there was a thread about employment/benefits etc etc and two of my critics, who claimed what the hell, and that insults are part and parcel of NSC, responded. They described their jobs and it was clear that they have huge responsibility in their workplace, where, it is reasonable to assume, that they would at the very least frown on insults aimed at colleagues. Yet, it is Ok here.

Of course it's ****ing ok here you complete and utter ****ing moron it's the ****ing internet. People are allowed to let their hair down occasionally, having a job with responsibility doesn't mean you have to go bed every night with your ******** clenched for fear of farting and upsetting someone. Jesus wept.

I was waiting for a post such as this!! Seriously, it is strange how people will revert to exaggerated comparisons to try and make their opinion that shade more believable.

I'd love to be around when Husty hits 21 and reads back some of the stuff he wrote on the ****ing internet. Will be the new dictionary definition of 'cringe'.

What the feck is going on?

We've got the debate about Ian Hart's column rumbling on; very random discussions about obscure 80s pop bands and song titles, which is almost making my head bleed; harks back to the days and controversies during our final days at the Goldstone; to considering whether Husty has in fact even reached puberty yet. All in one thread.

Who needs acid...

Does anyone else start off reading these threads fairly amused, get to about page 12 then a dejected, almost self-pitying feeling sweeps over you when you start to question why you're wasting precious minutes of your life bothering - and realise you're watching a bunch of middle aged men bitch and whine like teenage girls OVER A ****ING GAME

Well yes I agree with you, but late last night the thread went of on a tangent at post #216 when Bucks Fizz was mentioned :D

She sounds like she could do with a good load of abuse. Perhaps you could just post Dogshit through her letterbox?
