If the club really really wanted Dean to stay (didnt have the scot midfielder lined up as a potential replacement and weren't interested in taking 250k if it came their way) then they would have offered him this 'substantial' new contract offer about a year ago rather than even letting it get to the stage where his agent was touting round for a new club.

Im sure the club did want him to stay but as soon as their resolve was tested they were happy to take the money.

We'll never know whether whatever the club offered to Hammond could be considered a "good deal" or not. You get the agents side of it, and you get the chairmans side of it. None of us are in a position to judge.

But there HAS to be a wage structure at the club - that is probably the single most crucial aspect of running a football club. Give in to one players/agents demands, and you get a queue of them at the door all wanting their cut. We're working within a budget, and if that budget doesn't satisfy some players, then they are shown the door.

I say again - I'd rather that than doing a Luton. Theres never been a HINT of this club going into administration under this board - and I don't think thats something we should take for granted. The purse strings are kept tight because they HAVE to be. The alternative is to lurch from one crisis to the next (Bournemouth ?), and that doesn't bear thinking about.

I won't boo him, but the more I think about it there is a sour taste in my mouth. I remember when we offered him a three month contract to prove himself, when many clubs would have booted him out.

We moved the earth to try and keep him, but he has now made his bed. We were lied to, not for the first time, but it doesn't make it right. If he had any ambition, he would have played out of his skin for us this season and beyond and earned a move to the Championship, rather than sign for a team desperately trying to tread water, throwing cash about to stay up, unless it was entirely about money.

However, in hindsight, we should have tried to tie him up when we offered contracts to Lynch and Cox (twice?).

Spot on, we probably are too careful sometimes, but rather that than go into administration

Just add the point I made for the chairman to be honest and admit we cannot compete with other clubs wages, then people will fully understand when players go for the money. Instead of trying to blacken their names with the fans.

I won't boo him.

I am however slightly annoyed that he left us for a team that will be playing in the same league as us next season.

It seems like a sideways move to me, and it doesn't show much ambition from him

Will everyone STOP being so bitter. Who died?!!!! Mediocre player leaves mediocre old club for mediocre new club. That's all.

Personally, I wish him luck. Decent player, we'll miss some parts of his play but he's not irreplaceable. Fresh blood, lot of new faces, this saturday's game is actually the most exciting to look forward to in a long time!

Ok make ya mind up, mediocre OR decent player, which one is it? :p

Clearly, in my eyes, in it for the money.

Will see his comments on the club, if there are any, and decide whether he warrants a booing if we ever play him again.

I would never boo a former Albion player, regardless of who they were or the manner in which they left, far better to register any displeasure by remaining silent when their name is read out for the opposition.

Further to the post by Easy 10, under the current administration we have had ten years of trying to stay afloat in the most trying of circumstances, during that time we even managed three years as a Championship club...not bad considering we narrowly avoided dropping out of the league (twice) during the same timescale.

Yes we want to see the club prosper and rise up the leagues at a new stadium, but for us to have a club to follow ten years after leaving the Goldstone is little short of miraculous, reading the posts on here it just reminds me how expectations vary wildly. It is clear that there are many people living in other parts of the Solar System, I really hope that I never find myself on whichever planets you have taken up residence, life is far better when you can feel Earth under your feet.

No boos from me.

Instead, I think, a quiet chuckle - as he gets completely overrun by Thomson and the 33 Colchester fans in the away end get on his back for not trying hard enough.

I shall react with a massive amount of indifference. Which was pretty much exactly the same as my reaction to him when he played with us, tbh.

Why would you boo him??

If you call signing somone from League 2 and some unknown from Dublin, aswell as loosing big players for us 'ambition' then you dont have you sights set very high.

Ambition would have been signing someone from the Championship who can get us up there, not save us from relegation in League 1!!!

Well done Deano, you got offered more money and at a better standard, fair play!!

I would bet that MOST people on here wouldnt think twice about their current employers if they got offered more money somewhere else, at a better company!!

Of course I won't boo him.
Players change clubs all the time. He didn't mess us around. He rejected a contract offer but with with enough time so that we could sell him for a fair price. He did a good job for us but now he's gone. End of.
