Hamilton and McClaren stripped of points

The thing is though, because Trulli made a mistake and went off the road is the third place rightly his? It seems McLaren wanted clarification as to whether Hamilton's pass of him was legal (hence taking the safe option of letting him through) but then rather stupidly didn't tell the whole story when asked about it. Though as others have said the stewards really should have checked the radios too...

Whether Trulli's 3rd place would have been valid or not after his mistake during the safety car would have been a matter for the stewards to decide. What McLaren and Hamilton contrived to do though was, in effect, to "pervert the course of justice" in order to benefit from a mistake by the stewards. They saw an opportunity to exploit, and unforgivably, they tried to take it.

I wouldn't be surprised to see something like a 4 of 5 race suspension for McLaren for that, at least. Which would be monstrously unfair on his team-mate Kovalainen, but when your team is involved in lying to affect a race result, what other option is there ?

My take, for what it's worth

Trulli slides off the track, Hamilton passes

Hamilton is unsure whether or not to let him back through especially after the incident last year so McLaren ask for clarification for the stewards

Stewards information not forthcoming so McLaren tell Hamilton to let Trulli pass which is appears they shouldn't have done as Hamilton was entitled to the place

After the race McLaren (inc Hamilton himself) go to the stewards to try and get the place back and stupdily decide to lie rather than just say they wern't sure what to do

In summary the stewards, as usual, have made a cock up by not telling McLaren what to do at the time and also by making such a bad decision last year that McLaren were afraid of what would happen if they didn't allow the place back, meaning they relinquished a place that they should not.

But also McLaren are clearly at fault because their little white lie was clearly never gouing to just get 3rd place back, it was actually accusing Trulli of cheating which is bang out of order

While I agree with much of what you've said on this topic, this is where the problem arises. McClaren have no faith in the ability of the stewards to (impartially) do their job, as they've been on the end of several 'dubious' decisions in recent years. Trulli runs wide, Hamilton overtakes; McClaren seeks clarification from the stewards whether he's allowed to keep the place. What SHOULD have happened was they receive an answer either way from the stewards, and can act accordingly. The problems start when they don't receive an answer from the stewards. Of course what should then happen is the drivers stay as they are until the end of the race, and if the stewards say Hamilton should not have overtaken, they swap the positions. McClaren have no faith in this happening, so, fearful of a 25-second penalty/10-place deduction/whatever-it-takes-to-get-him-behind-the-Ferraris punishment, they relinquish the place.

That McClaren then subsequently lie, and should be punished, is beyond doubt IMHO. That they were stupid enough to do so knowing that the stewards had access to the team radios beggars believe, and they deserve whatever (and I mean anything) punishment they are given. However the inability of the stewards to do their jobs is seriously hampering F1.

It wasn't a little white lie at all.
It was a great big hairy stinking one borne out of an overriding desire to leap an extra place up the finishings at the expense of someone else.

I agree with this, it's just put a lot better than I managed!

Oh I agree. The stewards have come out of this VERY badly as well, as it has brutally exposed their rank incompetence (once again). That will only add fuel to their fury at McLarens behaviour in exploiting them in this way.

The backlash from this could be huge. The consequences for McLaren look dire.

Easy, you're spot on.

Chuck the book at them....they could have been more honest but no, they wanted 6 points!

I hope Hamilton and the team gets what they deserve!!

Its called "Sportsmanship!"

what is clear is that he's a f***ing grass, putting all the blame on dave ryan.

so if you are faced with taking it all yourself and be banned for the season, you would not have done the same?
